It looks like Microsoft’s grit is paying off. After years of shepherding its Surface tablets, Microsoft seems to have convinced its partners that there is a market for premium, Windows-based ultra portables. HP’s Spectre x2 caught our attention late last year and Dell’s XPS 12 and Lenovo’s Yoga (technically a convertible) impressed us more recently. Asus announced the super slim Zenbook UX305 during the IFA trade show in Berlin in September. This ultrabook will be available in two models: one with a 1920x1080 IPS display and one with a QHD+ display that boasts a resolution of 3200x1800. After showing off its super-thin Zenbook UX305 at Intel’s Developer Forum in San Francisco last September, ASUS has the system for sale in the U.S. The laptop owes its slim profile to the Intel Core M processor, which doesn’t require fans. The Consumer Electronics Show is about to get underway, and Intel is leading the pack with a set of CPU announcements. It has been six months since the company took the lid off its first 14nm processor, the Core M, but that CPU is designed for the ultramobile, low-power market. For the past year, Intel has pursued what's known as a contra-revenue strategy in its mobile division, where product is deliberately sold at a loss to win market share and compete effectively. Dell just launched a trio of new tablets at its Dell World conference, currently taking place in Austin, Texas. It has become clear that Intel didn't want to waste much time before following-up on its initial Core M lineup, because despite those first chips dropping just a couple of months ago, the company has added 4 more to its roster. Intel's latest processor design and manufacturing effort marks a first for the semiconductor industry. No other semiconductor manufacturer in the world is building chips at the level of Intel's 14nm (nanometer) process node; even large memory manufacturers like Toshiba and Samsung are just now hitting 19nm.
