Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Breathes 840 Horsepower And Rips 9.65-Second 1/4 Mile Runs

Dodge Challenger SRT Demon

Dodge turned a lot of heads (even Jay Leno's) when it rolled out its 707-horsepower Charger SRT Hellcat and Challenger SRT Hellcat in 2014, two of the most powerful muscle cars ever. Now three years later the automaker has outdone itself. The company's 2018 Challenger SRT Demon is, as it sounds, hellaciously fast and wicked powerful, serving up 840 horses and 770 pounds-feet of torque from its supercharged 6.2L Hemi Demon V8 engine.

That is not a typo—with 840 horsepower at its command, the Challenger SRT Demon is the most powerful V8 production car engine ever produced, Dodge notes. With so much power underneath the hood, it should come as no surprise that Dodge was able to break a few records. One of them is the quarter-mile. The Challenger SRT Demon finished the quarter-mile run with an NHRA-certified time of just 9.65 seconds at 140 miles per hour, making it the fastest quarter-mile car in the world.

It's also the fastest 0-60 production car, taking a mere 2.3 seconds to go from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour. Getting to 30 miles per hour takes only a second, and not a millisecond more. These times translate into a g-force acceleration rating of 1.8g, the highest of any production car.

The Challenger SRT Demon is truly a marvel in modern automobile design. In addition to breaking land speed records, Dodge's latest muscle car brings with it a boatload of other bragging rights, some of which include:
  • First-ever, factory-production car designed to run on 100+ high-octane unleaded fuel or 91 octane on demand
  • First-ever, factory-production car with TransBrake for more powerful and quicker launches
  • First-ever, factory-production drag car with Torque Reserve, to deliver increased levels of power and torque at launch
  • First-ever, factory-production car with front passenger seat delete
And get this—the Challenger SRT Demon is also the world's first production car to lift the front wheels at launch. In fact, it set the world record (as recognized by Guinness World Records) for the longest wheelie from a standing start by a production car, keeping the front wheels off the ground for a full 2.92 feet.

"With Demon, our goal was to build a car that would tattoo the Dodge logo into the subconscious of the general market, beyond even our loyal enthusiasts," said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Cars—Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA North America. "To do so, we had to set records that have never been set before, do more than has ever been done before, go beyond even the legendary Hellcat. The result: an 840-horsepower, 9-second muscle car unlike anything that has ever come before it."

If you'd like to own one—and let's be honest, who wouldn't?—you'll get your chance later this year, for a pretty penny no doubt. Dodge is only summoning 3,000 Demons from the factory for the U.S. and 300 for Canada. Production begins this summer with deliveries kicking off in the fall.
