We've suspected that 3D printing would be the next underground technology to emerge on the mainstream scene, and it's nuggets like this that continue to support that belief. With a major showing at CES this year, the 3D printing world is poised to make a serious impact in Main Street, and even Adobe can't ignore it. The famed software giant has just announced 3D printing capabilities within Adobe Photoshop CC. It's available right away to cloud-based customers, enabling them to "easily and reliably build, refine, preview, prepare and print 3D designs." With today’s release of Photoshop CC,... Read more...
Adobe had much to boast about during its third-quarter earnings call this week, and not surprisingly, much of that revolved around its Creative Cloud service. On that front, the company has said that it's just reached the 1 million subscriber milestone; most notable for the fact that these are not cheap subscriptions, starting out at $20 for a single app license, and $50 for the kit and caboodle. Despite the initial success, many have wondered if the company's major focus on the cloud would come and bite it down the road, a question that only heightened earlier this month when the company announced... The digital world is here, and there's really no getting around it. In the gaming sector, physical media still rules, and in the movie realm, Blu-ray Discs are still selling. But the digital creep is happening. Netflix and streaming outfits are dominating, and even software outfits such as Steam are doing quite well in moving software over mere tubes. Adobe is a major software player that has promised to fully commit to the cloud by the end of next year, giving us one less boxed package to consider in the future. In the meanwhile, it has just launched a low-priced entry into its renowned services.... Read more...
After eight years of terrible webcam singing, nut shots, illegal backyard wrestling, skateboarding accidents, adorable puppies and babies, Photoshop tutorials, and on and on (and on and on), YouTube will stop accepting video submissions and will declare a winner for best video ever. “We started YouTube in 2005 as a contest with the simple goal to find the best video in the world. We had no idea we’d get such a great response,” said a guy in a video that YouTube made. Judges include an appropriate diversity of seasoned film critics, YouTube celebrities, and the most prolific YouTube... Read more...

If there's one piece of photo editing software that just about everyone seems familiar with, or at least acquainted with, it's Photoshop. Adobe's history in the space stretches back many years, and every new edition of the program receives huge amounts of attention as digital artists wait to see what kind of magic lies in the next-gen code. But what about the original code? It can now be yours if you want it. Way back in 1988, a program called "Display" was renamed "Photoshop," with Adobe agreeing to license and sell it in April of 1989. Over the next decade, over three million copies of the program... Do you know who's cooler than the girl with the dragon tattoo? Megan Orsi, a former student at the Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts who's currently a wife and mother to an 18-month-old son. Orsi's also a Photoshop user and is so passionate about the program that she had a Photoshop toolbar tattooed on her arm. She's now known as "the girl with the Photoshop tattoo," a distinction that Adobe embraced as it sought her out for a short interview. The biggest question on everyone's mind has got to be, why get a Photoshop tattoo? "Honestly? I’ve always loved tattoos,"... Read more...
As any software company well knows, there comes a time where you simply cannot support older versions. Try getting Microsoft to give you tech support on Windows 3.1, for example. But that line has always been a fine one, and Adobe has been pushing its luck of late. For instance, Lightroom 3 will never get a RAW plug-in update to support Nikon's D4, despite Lightroom 4 only recently shipping. But while the company may get away with that, it has been forced to change its tone with regard to security. A convenient update like D4 support is one thing; patching security holes only for those who buy... Read more...
