The writing has been on the wall for quite some time — Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services Division has been a complete disaster and a money pit. Microsoft bought the division for $7.9 billion in spring 2014, and a year later, the company had to take an impairment charge of $7.6 billion for the purchase. Since that time, the Redmond, Washington-based company has laid off thousands of employees that it brought over from Nokia along with additional Microsoft employees that were already working on smartphone hardware and software. To make matters worse, smartphone sales have plummeted... Read more...
When it comes to smartphone operating systems, there’s Android and iOS — and then, there’s everybody else. BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile are both in the low single digits (or lower) and have failed to gain any significant traction in the marketplace in recent years. Despite the fact that Windows 10 Mobile is continually evolving and getting better as the year progresses, Microsoft made it clear that mobile isn’t a primary focus at this time. "We're fully committed to that 4-inch screen, there will be a time for it to be our focus, but right now it's part of the family but it's... Read more...
Forget almost everything you’ve read about the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL up to this point. We know that’s a bold statement, but bear with us here. Save for the phone’s specifications, if there’s one thing we’ve learned evaluating the 950 XL over the last few weeks it’s that virtually everything from the OS to the camera app has been changed or updated very recently, and it has affected battery life, responsiveness, and browsing, among many other things. Information published about the Lumia 950 XL that's any more than a couple of weeks old is simply outdated. It seems that Microsoft was tweaking a... Read more...
After initially targeting a December launch for Windows 10 Mobile upgrades, Microsoft has announced that it is finally upgrading select Windows Phone 8.1 devices to its latest and greatest mobile operating system. Windows 10 Mobile, as its name implies, is built on the Windows 10 codebase and is Microsoft’s latest attempt to take on smartphone OS leaders Android and iOS. “Consistent with our approach to the Windows 10 PC upgrade, we are focused on delivering a high quality experience for our customers,” writes Windows and Devices Group Core Quality CVP Michael Fortin. “The Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor... If you’re running a Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL or a Lumia 550, your smartphone came straight from the factory running Windows 10 Mobile (which is still a work in progress). For those running older Lumias with Windows Phone 8.1, you’ve had to wait patiently for the official release of Windows 10 Mobile or take your chances in the Windows Insider program via test builds. Now, Evan Blass, who is well known to those that follow the mobile industry, is claiming that Microsoft will initiate a wide scale rollout of Windows 10 Mobile later this month. “In an email to partners, Microsoft is now targeting a... Microsoft has just released another update to Windows 10 Mobile, bringing us up to version 10586.122. The company notes that this isn't going to be the bulkiest release it's let loose, but that those coming from Windows Phone 8.1 should notice the most obvious improvements with regards to the upgrade experience. The company also added support for 4 new phones: MCJ Madosma Q501, BLU Win HD W510U, BLU Win HD LTE X150Q, and ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fierce XL. This is one of the rarer builds that actually goes to the Slow and Release Preview rings, so if you're running the Fast ring and want to go with a more... Read more...
It appears that the a wide-scale rollout of Windows 10 Mobile in the United States can’t be too away. We reported earlier this week that T-Mobile has started pushing the update to select Lumia smartphones in Poland, while the the wireless carrier is also prepping a German rollout in the coming weeks. Today, Windows Phone 8.1 users in Latin America are reporting that their Lumia 535 smartphones are being upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile — more specifically, they are being updated to Build 10586.39 courtesy of the CV LTA ROM. While it’s great news that Microsoft and its wireless partners are showing... Read more...
Earlier this month, we reported that Microsoft was doing its best to avoid having to deal with slowpoke wireless carriers when it comes to delivering OS updates for Lumia smartphones. Instead of going through a carrier validation process, Microsoft on its own pushed build Windows 10 Build 10586.29 to Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL smartphones. In essence, this makes the operating system update process for Windows 10 Mobile more akin to iOS than what we’ve seen with the fragmented nature of Android. The ability to bypass carriers means that Microsoft can deliver more timely security and feature updates... Read more...
Microsoft already lifted the curtain to reveal Windows 10 Mobile when its Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL handsets launched to retail, but for legacy Lumia device owners, the waiting game is still being played out. For how long? If going by Vodafone Australia's time frame, Windows 10 Mobile won't roll out to older handsets until at least February of next year, if not longer.Vodaphone posted an updated chart detailing the statuses of new software versions for various handsets, including both Android and Windows 10 Mobile. For the latter, Vodafone lists five different Lumia phones -- Lumia 630, Lumia... Read more...
The mantra from Microsoft has been "Windows 10 for all devices" repeated over and over again, and having played with the OS extensively on the desktop, we think the company is headed in the right direction. At the same time, it's not a movement that will happen overnight. As we've seen. it's taking some time to roll out Windows 10 Mobile beyond Microsoft's flagship Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL devices. Microsoft originally promised to release Windows 10 Mobile to older Lumia handsets by the end of the year. No here we are with less than two weeks to go before it's time to toss our 2015 calendars... Be sure to check out our Lumia 950 review here... Microsoft rolling out an update to one of its OSes isn't often that big of a deal, because let's be honest, it happens all the time. An update just issued for Windows 10 Mobile is a bit of an exception. Not because of what it actually introduces (or fixes); but because of how it was released. Typically, any mobile OS update needs to go through the carrier that sold a customer their phone, and often, that can take a long time. Thanks to Apple's tightly-run ecosystem, there's never a delay there, but on Android, many will never see the latest... Read more...
The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are important products for Microsoft, but not for the reasons you may expect. Microsoft isn’t trying to set the mobile market ablaze with these two smartphones. They are not necessarily meant to be explosive sales successes that take significant market share from Android and iOS. If they were, Microsoft would have thrown huge amounts of marketing muscle and dollars behind them, launched a massive advertising campaign, and worked deals with every major wireless carrier it could. But Microsoft didn't.  The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are more about laying a foundation and setting... Read more...
Microsoft and Nokia have done a great job of making Lumia smartphones difficult to break into at a low-level, but software hacker Heathcliff has just proven that it's not impossible. He's just released a great-looking tool called Windows Phone Internals, and it can do everything from unlocking the bootloader to replacing the phone's ROM. WP Internals is a completely free download, though Heathcliff welcomes donations by those who've found the tool useful. Based on the introduction video, it seems that a lot of effort went into this, and unlike most tools of this nature, detailed descriptions are... Read more...
Microsoft just opened a brand new, flagship store at 677 5th Avenue, in New York City. And since we’re just a short drive away, and were already spending some time in Manhattan today with the folks from Motorola and Verizon, we thought we’d pop in and take a look around.Microsoft's New Flagship Store On 5th Ave.Before you even get close to the front doors, there is no mistaking that this new store is all about Microsoft. Multiple logos are visible from across the road and a ton of product is front-and-center for all to see, behind the giant wall of glass out front. The store is comprised of multiple... Read more...
