Mobile chip maker Qualcomm has inked a definitive agreement to purchase NXP Semiconductors in a deal valued at around $47 billion. The board of directors of both companies gave unanimous approval for the acquisition, which will see Qualcomm buy all of NXP's stock at $110 per share, an 11.5 percent premium over NXP's closing price on Wednesday. With Intel finding itself inside most of the world's consumer PCs and enterprise servers, it's begun making a massive push on making sure its chips wind up in all other devices - those that most of us regular folk don't think about. The IoT movement is well under way, for better or worse. On the plus side, we now have access to a wide range of internet-connected devices ranging from smartwatches to webcams to thermostats to even refrigerators. We've talked a lot about IoT devices here at HotHardware, but over the past year, it's become increasingly clear that we have to be careful with how we roll out new devices. Companies are leading us on to believe that in the future, the world will simply be blanketed with IoT devices everywhere. We see that as a potentially major security risk. Our simple IoT devices could become part of a DDoS network, and we'd not even know it. Earlier this morning, we reported on the troubling news that the source code for the Mirai IoT DDoS botnet is now out in the open. If you recall, Miari is the botnet that was able to flood KrebsOnSecurity with 620 gigabits per second of traffic using a horde of zombie IoT devices (the attack was so devastating that Akamai cancelled its pro bono hosting arrangement with Brian Krebs). However, with Mirai source code now out for anyone to take advantage of, we may be seeing even more wide-scale DDoS attacks taking place in the future.
