Conventional wisdom dictates that you don't go around trying to reinvent the wheel. It's already perfectly shaped for transportation, and while Ned the know-it-all thinks he might have a better solution, his hybrid square/triangle thingamawhatever is doomed to fail. With that in mind, is Asus off its rocker in trying something new in the netbook category? We don't think so. The market for netbooks has cooled off considerably compared to what it once was, and everybody seems enamored with tablets these days. That might explain the fresh take Asus is taking with its Eee PC X101 netbook, a $200 machine... Read more...
Among the myriad of other products, like the Padfone, Asus has just unveiled and will likely continue to unveil at Computex this week were a pair of exciting ultraportable notebooks and netbooks that are sure to pique the interest of the discerning road-warriors out there. The just announced Asus UX Series ultraportable notebooks prove that thin is most definitely in this year and the upcoming Asus Eee PC X101 reinforces that assertion. Asus UX Series Notebook--Notice The "Spun" Finish On The Lid According to Asus, the new UX Series ultraportables have been developed in close cooperation... Read more...
Netbooks might not be the trendy option anymore, not with tablet PCs trotting about with their fancy pants touchscreen panels and light weight designs, but have you have tried hammering out anything longer than a short email on one? There are just some things that are better suited for a netbook, which is the reason why manufacturers keep launching more models. One of the latest to reach North American shores is the Asus Eee PC 1015PX. This is the company's very first netbook to come packing an Intel Atom N570 dual-core processor clocked at 1.66Ghz, which is a bit faster than the N550. It also... Read more...
After witnessing countless press releases for single-core netbooks over the past couple of years, the dual-core revolution is finally here, and it's Asus that's leading the charge. According to Asus, its newly introduced Eee PC 1015PEM netbook is the first netbook in the U.S. to feature Intel's two-cored Atom N550 processor, though it certainly won't be the last. Likely serving as a blueprint for all future dual-core netbook releases, the Eee PC 1015PEM ships with a 10.1-inch LED backlit screen, up to 2GB of DDR3 memory, 160GB/250GB/320GB hard drive (Asus also tosses in 500GB of its cloud-based... We seem to be heading into an era where netbooks aren't being positioned as the bargain bin machines that they once were. We can't recall the last time we saw a $199 or $249 netbook arrive.  The vast majority coming our way now are priced at around $399 at least, and Asus' Eee PC 1215N fits the mold here. With a $499 MSRP, this isn't the netbook to get if you're looking to pinch pennies, but it does offer the latest Intel Atom CPU, NVIDIA's next generation Ion GPU with Optimus graphics switching technology. That's solid power in a netbook... Asus Eee PC 1215N Netbook Review... Read more...
Is Intel's Pinetrail platform really all its cracked up to be? We recently took an in-depth look at the 1.8GHz processor / platform, but it's a different thing to take a look at the same thing in a shipping product that's available today to consumers. We have been longing for faster Atom processors, and particularly in recent months, we felt as if even the newer Atom chips weren't fast enough compared to their predecessors. That said, the new Atom D525 dual-core chip holds a bit more promise, at least on paper, for the next generation of netbooks. We seem to be heading into an era where netbooks... Read more...
Much of the discussion on the iPad's purported disruptive effect on the computer industry has focused on devices like Amazon's Kindle. A recent announcement from Asus, however, indicates the iPad has hit the netbook industry hard. This news tops off a rather wretched Q2 for the company—total sales revenue was $2.29 billion, down 6.6 percent quarter-on-quarter, with gross margin down 1.5 percentage points to 11.9 percent and net profit down 17.9 percent. The decline affected multiple product segments, including motherboards, netbooks, and notebooks. Asus was mum on the reason for declining... Read more...
In recent years, Asus has found a proven formula for success. Build a device -- even if it's already been done -- slap the "Eee" label on it, and sit back and collect the cash. That's been Asus' MO for a number of gadgets, and now it looks like we can add external storage to the list. Some attentive folk noticed that Taiwan vendor PC Home has started selling the Asus Eee PC 30GB 1.8-inch USB drive. According to the spec sheet, it supports USB 2.0 speeds and works with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, though we see no reason why it wouldn't also run on Windows 7. Of course, portability is the name of... Read more...
Around seven months ago, we were able to review one of the more advanced netbooks out at the time, the Eee PC 1201N. It was one of the first netbooks to integrate a graphics chip known as the NVIDIA Ion.  The Eee PC 1201PN retains many of the same features and nearly the exact same form factor as the original, but it utilizes the next-generation of Ion (we'll call it Ion 2 throughout), which is based on a discrete NVIDIA GeForce 210M GPU. But have the minor hardware upgrades and the Ion 2 chip made this machine powerful enough to warrant an upgrade if you purchased an older netbook with Atom... Read more...
It's been said for years by industry veterans: a lot can happen in a very short window of time when you're dealing with technology. As soon as one piece of cutting-edge tech makes it to market, the next big thing is just days, weeks or months away. In the netbook realm, that hasn't applied as much. Netbooks haven't evolved nearly as quickly as desktop and standard notebooks are evolving these days, largely because of just how difficult it is to create chips that have low power consumption and reasonable thermal characteristics, coupled with improved performance.  There's also the issue of... Android tablets are all the rage right now. Earlier, we told you about Lenovo's plan to launch an Android Tablet dubbed LePad later this year. It appears Asus is also eying Google's mobile OS for its first tablet device. The upcoming Asus Eee Pad will be an extension of the company's already popular Eee netbook line. However, the Eee Pad will look and feel more like the iPad than a traditional computer. The Eee Pad has been in the works for a little while and Asus had reportedly been using a slimmed-down version of Windows as the operating system. Now, Netbooknews is reporting that Asus has scrapped... Read more...
There was a point in the past few years where there was a new Eee PC being announced every month or so. At a time, we easily found over 20 active Eee PC netbook models, with small tweaks to each meaning that your perfect netbook was almost certainly available from Asus. But as the netbook category has evolved and the hype has died down somewhat, Asus has scaled back on the amount of Eee PC models they're making. But stop entirely? No way. The company's latest machine has just been revealed, with the Eee PC 1005PX giving netbook buyers a colorful amount of options. Internally, there's a 1.6GHz Atom... Read more...
For a company that was once producing a new Eee PC netbook about every month, Asus has yet to introduce a new one in awhile. Of course, that's a relative term, but even going a few months without hearing of new Eee PC seems odd. Now, Asus has given us yet another machine to look at, the Eee PC 1201K. What's most unique about this machine isn't the typical Seashell design, but the AMD chip inside. Rather than relying on Intel's familiar Atom family, Asus has chosen the AMD Geode NX 1750 processor with a SiS 741GX/966L chipset. These parts are joined by a 320GB hard drive, a 0.3MP webcam, a built-in... Read more...
Asus announced a new multimedia centric netbook—the Eee PC Seashell 1005PR—which is designed to deliver a "rich and smooth High Definition online viewing experience when watching your favorite streaming movies, television/news programs and user-generated videos." The Eee PC Seashell 1005PR features Broadcom's  Crystal HD Accelerator, an Intel Atom processor N450, 10.1-inch screen with 1366x768 resolution, and HD audio. Asus claims you'll get up to 11 hours of battery life, but we all know that's best-case scenario. Look for the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PR today at authorized resellers... Read more...
