When a game like Borderlands is as funny as it is, as action-packed as it is, and features no shortage of interesting characters, it's inevitable that a movie is going to happen. And that's just what's going down thanks to a new partnership between Lionsgate, Take-Two, and Gearbox. I admit - as a rabid fan of the Borderlands series, the thought of a movie adaption concerns me. It seems like the amount of great movies that have transitioned well from a game are few, and perhaps could be counted on one hand (thanks for dragging that ratio down, Uwe Boll!) But, this production does have one trick... Read more...
2K Games and Gearbox Software has a magnificent duo of gaming releases to announce today, starting off with Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, which will be available for both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. The set will include both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which was released late last year. The Handsome Collection will also come with downloadable content for both titles. While that’s all well and good, there’s an even greater bundle available that will not only bring out your inner child, but will also empty your wallet. If you’re one of the lucky 5,000 people that... Read more...
Gamespy's multiplayer servers are getting unplugged and going dark on May 31, and as the deadline approaches, game publishers are scrambling to find new homes. For 2K, the solution is simple -- send its more popular games over to Steamworks. That includes the first Borderlands titles and several Civilization games, which are all headed to Steam. "Beginning May 31, 2014, Borderlands 1 and select titles from the Civilization catalog will temporarily go offline while service is transitioned to Steamworks," 2K announced in a blog post. "During the transition, players will experience interruption of... Read more...
As if 2014 hasn't already delivered plenty of video gaming goodness to keep you occupied well into the weekend (as in, every single weekend), here's a bit of news that'll have avid RPGers excited: Borderlands is back. The next rendition of the heralded title will be a "pre-sequel," described as a "full-on co-op shooter RPG set in the five year gap between Borderlands 1 & 2)." It will reportedly be set on the moon of Elpis, and players can select "one of Jack/Johns four lieutenants to play as in Athena The Gladiator, Wilhelm The Enforcer, Nisha The Lawbringer and Fragtrap, a militarized claptrap."... Depending on how big a fan of the Borderlands series you are, the latest news out of Gearbox might depress or excite you. Company CEO Randy Pitchford spoke out late last week that Borderlands 3 isn't in development; instead, Gearbox is focusing on not one, but two new IPs. It should be stressed that Pitchford isn't writing-off the idea of another Borderlands game. Rather, this just isn't the time for one. He states, "We have more to do in the franchise", which makes it clear that we will see another title down the road. Ultimately, given the unbelievable success of the last game, that shouldn't... Do you like Borderlands 2? Do you like killing stuff in Borderlands 2? Well, if you happen to live in the US, you'll want to head on over to the special site seen at the bottom of this post to sign-up and enter Gearbox's '$100,000 Loot Hunt' contest. Taking part is simple: Beginning on October 11th, hop into Borderlands 2 and, as Claptrap states, "do what comes naturally". Each day, you'll have to meet a target in order to qualify for that day's prizes, and even if you don't manage to win a real-life prize, you will still reap the benefits of improved in-game loot. Prizes include PSP Vitas for... Read more...
With the release of Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, we were led to believe that Borderlands 2 would be seeing no more DLC. As it turns out, we're just not going to be seeing more DLC that introduces vast new worlds. At PAX Australia, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who just last month showed us around the Gearbox offices and his humble abode, announced that the biggest piece of upcoming DLC is called Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2, which increases the level cap by 11, adds a "Digistruct Peak Challenge", and allow gamers to "over level" the game, in order to continue getting a challenge that... It's hard to tell if this is a semi-elaborate publicity stunt, or if it's a warning to those who decide to catch a few Zs at work. Gearbox's Steve Gibson was allegedly found sleeping on a couch by a co-worker who quickly snapped-up a photo and posted it to Twitter. As far as Gibbie is concerned, we hope that Gearbox assumes his nap was due to the long hours he was putting in. One thing the picture-snapper didn't notice (again, allegedly - I have a hard time believing this) is that in the background, a perfectly-placed poster board for Borderlands 2's forthcoming (and fourth) DLC sits... The original Borderlands was a surprise smash hit, selling millions of copies more than its developer, Gearbox, ever thought it would. The first game's randomized weapon generation, unique cell-shaded graphics, steep difficulty, and excellent co-op was a potent combination -- more than enough to overcome complaints about its thin story. Borderlands 2 launched this morning, and early reviews paint it as a further improvement on its predecessor. The dark humor, crazy NPCs, and frenetic combat of the original game are faithfully replicated and the story is better; Kotaku's Tina Amini writes "The story... Read more...
id Software's Rage has launched for PC and the various consoles, but the game comes loaded with a laundry list of issues. Most of the graphical problems appear to affect ATI users, but not all--texture pop-in is reportedly a huge issue for both Nvidia and ATI. Texture pop-in, for those of you who've somehow missed the phenomenon, is that split-second delay between pig-ugly visuals and actual graphics that's invaded PCs since console ports became the norm. We've borrowed a pair of screenshots from Duke Nukem Forever, where the effect was particularly egregious, to illustrate. ATI released a Rage... Read more...
Ah, Christmas. The word itself conjures images of hearth and home, inspires (occasionally debaucherous) celebration, and is a time of spiritual contemplation for millions. In this crazy modern age, it's also a time when the bewildered parents of tech-savvy children all over the civilized world, regardless of race, ethnicity, religious background, or nationality are united through the magic of a single shared emotion—panic. From October to December, the advertising departments of a thousand companies exhort children to beg, cajole, and guilt-trip their parents for all manner of inappropriate digital... Read more...
