AMD's latest graphics card, the Radeon RX 480, is a great release for a bunch of reasons. At the forefront, the amount of performance offered at the card's $199 price-point ($239 for the 8GB model) is fantastic. When a brand-new $200 card can almost match last year's $500 one, there's good reason to be excited. AMD is circling the mainstream GPU market with the Radeon RX 480, which is available in both 4GB and 8GB variants. The graphics cards offer a ton of performance starting from just $200 (4GB) version, as you can see from Marco’s recent review of the cards. However, AMD just recently took the wraps off two Polaris-based graphics cards that will slot in below the RX 480 in performance. Predictably, they are called the Radeon RX 470 and RX 460 and will be priced from $149 and $99 respectively. AMD just made available the Radeon Software Crimson Edition driver v16.7.1 with fixes for the Radeon RX 480’s power consumption issues. The driver is available for download on AMD’s website now, and includes a long list of fixes and known issues. NVIDIA is launching an all-out assault on AMD in the PC graphics segment. In May, NVIDIA released the new graphics king: the GeForce GTX 1080. The company followed up on that beastly chip in June with slightly cut down GeForce GTX 1070. That trickledown effect is now reaching the mainstream market with the arrival of the GeForce GTX 1060. The GTX 1060 can be seen as a direct response to the AMD Radeon RX 480, which offers a ton of performance at the $200 price point. It's been quite an eventful week since AMD took the veil off of its latest graphics card, the Radeon RX 480. Right out of the gate, murmurs of issues began to surface around the internet, largely focusing on the amount of power that gets pulled through a motherboard's PCIe slot. AMD is working on a driver fix that will address the power draw of the Radeon RX 480, its first Polaris part and a graphics card we determined is easily the best value in its price segment (see our full review for more in-depth coverage). The driver, Radeon Software 16.7.1, is in the final testing stage and will release to the public within the next 48 hours, AMD said in the wee hours of the morning. It's been discovered that some Radeon RX 480 graphics cards are pulling more power from the PCI-Express slot than what is allowed by spec, which is 75W. In theory, going over spec could damage lower end motherboards and there have already been some claims of that happening. As a result, AMD is working on an updated driver to fix affected cards. We don't have the tools to check for PCIe power draw, but we've been putting the Radeon RX 480 through its paces with two different BIOS revisions, both at stock speeds and overclocked. Samsung hopes to bring curved displays to the masses with its 27-inch CF591. The monitor has an MSRP of $349.99 and is discounted in Samsung’s online store (and others), dropping the price to just under the $300 mark. Even without the discount though, the CF591 is one of the more affordable high-end curved displays, though it’s not the cheapest one currently available. But Samsung hopes that it hit the sweet spot here by combining tempting features with a low-ish price. For gaming enthusiasts, and most definitely for those of the AMD persuasion, the upcoming Zen microarchitecture is seen as a much-needed adrenaline boost for the company. Built on an advanced GlobalFoundries-sourced 14nm FinFET process, AMD is hoping that Zen will be able to go toe-to-toe with the best that Intel has to offer, while offering attractive pricing that the company has always been known for.
