Are you finding that your dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan graphics cards don't come close to breaking a sweat in the games and benchmarks you've thrown at it? Well, if you want to give your burlier configuration a beastly workout, look no further than Futuremark's newly minted 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra, purportedly the world's first 4K Ultra HD benchmark. Those of you running the Basic version of 3DMark are out of luck -- the new Fire Strike Ultra test is only available in the Advanced Edition and Professional Edition, so you'll need to pony up for a paid package rather than freeload off of the pro... In Futuremark's world, you either play by the rules or you're banished from the benchmarking kingdom. It's happened before -- on more than one occasion, actually -- and it just happened again, this time to Chinese handset maker Huawei and its Ascend P7 smartphone. Futuremark discovered that the Ascend P7 was using a trick to artificially inflate its 3DMark score, so the handset's been removed from the 3DMark performance rankings and now appears delisted and scoreless in the company's list of Best Smartphones and Tablets. One of Futuremark's rules is that "the platform may not detect the launch... Read more...
Futuremark first revealed in May of this year that it was working on a new DirectX 11 test for its popular 3DMark benchmarking program that would focus on gaming laptops and mid-range systems. Now just a few short weeks later, Futuremark is announcing the immediate availability of Sky Diver, which is a free update for all 3DMark users. Sky Diver includes a Demo run, two Graphics tests, a Physics tests, and a Combined test. As you might imagine, the Graphics tests measure GPU performance, the Physics test measures CPU performance, and the Combined test evaluates both the GPU and CPU. Running the... Read more...
We use a number of Futuremark’s benchmarks when we test systems around here, and there’s a new one coming called 3DMark “Sky Diver”, a DX11 bench aimed at gaming laptops and midrange PCs. “Sky Diver is the ideal test for benchmarking systems with mainstream DirectX 11 graphics cards, mobile GPUs, or integrated graphics,” reads an announcement from Futuremark. “The scene is brought to life with tessellation, particles and advanced post-processing effects.” You can see that Sky Diver entails a wingsuited person flying through a gorgeous, mountainous... Futuremark isn't letting up on its decision to publicly shame handsets and device manufacturers that get caught trying to game the company's 3DMark benchmark. Just the opposite, Futuremark wasted no time calling out HTC and its recently refreshed One (M8) for the way the device handles itself when running 3DMark . One of the rules manufacturers must follow is they can't implement a detection scheme that lets the device know when 3DMark is being launched, nor can the device alter its normal behavior based on such detection. This is where the HTC One (M8) gets itself in hot water. The HTC One (M8)... Read more...
Smartphone makers may have learned an important lesson -- don't try to pull a fast one in Futuremark's 3DMark benchmark, because if you're caught, Futuremark will make a public spectacle out of banning your product. This happened last November when Futuremark delisted several Samsung and HTC handsets for breaking benchmarking rules, stripping them of their rank and scores. That must have resonated with Samsung, because two of its devices have been unbanned following a software update. According to Futuremark, both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 now play by the rules as a result of an Android... Read more...
Futuremark has just updated its 3DMark benchmark for Android, introducing a couple of new features and preparations for beefier updates in the future. At the forefront is a new feature for recommending a device; once a benchmark run is complete, you can simply click on "Recommend". While Futuremark already ranks devices based on performance, this feature should prove useful when you'd actually recommend that very device to someone else - after all, just because a device performs well doesn't mean it's equally excellent in other areas. With this update, Futuremark is hinting that more tests are... Read more...
We saw a lot of Steam Machine announcements by both OEM and boutique system builders at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week (14 in all). It's safe to say that damn near everyone is excited about what Valve is doing, and with so much early support, it's already a little bit daunting sifting through the various configurations that aren't even available yet (most Steam Machine configurations are slated to launch later this year). To help make sense of it all, Futuremark went through and analyzed its database to estimate 3DMark Fire Strike scores for each configuration with confirmed... Read more...
Futuremark today released an update to the Windows desktop version of its 3DMark benchmark. If you grabbed your copy from Steam, you should receive the update automatically, otherwise the standalone version will check in with the mothership and ask you to install the update the next time you fire up the benchmark. On the buggy side, the 3DMark update fixes and improves hardware detection and monitoring. Running 3DMark Advanced or Professional Edition with compatible hardware will continue to generate an interactive graph of CPU and GPU clockspeeds and temperatures recorded during the test, only... When Apple introduced the iPad Air, the company made a big deal about the tablet having a custom 64-bit System-on-Chip (SoC) inside. It's the same 64-bit part found in the iPhone 5 and the latest iPad mini. If you own any of those devices and are into benchmarking, you'll be happy to know that Futuremark's 3DMark benchmark has just been updated to include a 64-bit version for those devices. Futuremark says the iPad Air, iPhone 5S, and second generation iPad mini will all see "slightly" improved scores with the newest 3DMark (version 1.2.0). 3DMark is a popular benchmark and one that we frequently... Benchmarking is serious business, and we're not saying that tongue-in-cheek. Buying decisions are often made based on how well a product benchmarks, which is why we spend so much time putting hot (and sometimes not-so-hot) hardware through their paces. However, benchmarks are only meaningful when there's a level playing field, and when companies try to 'game' the business of benchmarking, it's not only a form of cheating, it also bamboozles potential buyers who (rightfully) assume the numbers are supposed mean something. We bring this up because Futuremark just delisted a bunch of devices from... Read more...
Apple's new A7 SoC that sits at the heart of the iPad Air and iPhone 5S is a fast chip. Benchmarks and analysis have shown that it picks up its additional performance over the older A6 thanks to a mixture of architectural tweaks and, in some cases, its new 64-bit architecture. On average, the gains are split about 60/40 between the two areas, with more performance gains from the microarchitecture enhancements. But in one notable case -- the popular 3DMark, cross-platform benchmark -- this hasn't been true at all. In 3DMark Ice Storm, the iPhone 5S is significantly faster in GPU workloads -- almost... Futuremark has made available its 3DMark benchmark for Windows RT a little over a week before Microsoft is scheduled to release Surface 2 on October 22, 2013, the company announced today. Surface 2 boasts several improvements over its predecessor, both inside and out, but if you're wondering how its performance compares -- and in particular its gaming performance -- 3DMark will tell you the score, literally. There's a lot to like about 3DMark. For one, it's available as a free app for Windows RT devices from the Windows Store. Secondly, it's a cross platform benchmark that uses the same tests as... Earlier this year, Futuremark launched a version of its 3DMark benchmark that would run on PCs, notebooks, and mobile devices alike. Some mobile users could run the tests using 3Dmark for Android, and now there’s an iOS app, as well. 3Dmark for iOS lets users test and directly compare performance on iPads, iPhones, and even iPod touches. Further, Futuremark released a new test called 3Dmark Ice Storm Unlimited that’s included in the iOS version (and is currently available for the Android version) that allows for chip-to-chip comparisons across different mobile platforms. There’s... Read more...
