Over the last few weeks, AMD has been on a massive PR and gaming blitz. The company has rebranded and re-priced its Radeon HD 7000 family as the R7/R9 series of cards and kicked off a new era at the high end with the Radeon R9 290 and R9 290X. Toss in the launch of two AMD-powered consoles and the discussion around next-gen APIs like Mantle, and it's been a full-court press from Team Red, just in time for the holidays. According to OEMs we've spoken to, the attack is paying off. AMD's share of the boutique OEM market has risen significantly, by up to 3-5x depending on the manufacturer. Up until... Read more...

Just prior to the Radeon HD 2000 series' introduction, numerous rumors circulated regarding an ultra-high clocked ATI R600-based video card, that featured a large 1GB frame buffer.  Some went so far as to say the GPU would be clocked at or near 1GHz.  Spy shots even cropped up on the web showing the card in all its glory.  But sometime between then and the official launch, news of the card fizzled and when the R600 arrived in the form of the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT, it was outfitted with “only” 512MB of frame buffer memory and its GPU core and memory clock speeds, while somewhat high, didn’t come... We just received word from the Tech Report that they've posted an update to their Radeon HD 2900 XT launch article in an attempt to clear up an issue related to the R600 GPU's UVD support, or lack thereof... "The UVD logic handles the CPU-intensive bitstream processing and entropy decode acceleration portions of the HD video playback pipeline. These are the most notable video decode acceleration capabilities that would separate the Radeon HD 2900 series from its direct competition, the GeForce 8800 series, if the HD 2900 XT actually had them. Take a look at the red-head standing over there.  If you're a regular reader here at HotHardware, you know exactly who she is.  That's ATI's adventurous and oh-so-curvaceous front-woman, Ruby.  And she's holding that 'Perfect 10' sign for a very good reason.  It's probably not the reason you're thinking of, however.  For a digital personality, she's definitely pretty darn hot; maybe not a 10 in our book, but pretty darn close nonetheless.  No, she's holding that sign not as proclamation of her hotness, but rather to give you all a hint as to what ATI has in store for the PC in the coming days,...
