Would You Buy A Gold iPad? Reports Say Apple Thinks You Will

Say it with us now, "Gold is best!" That's the line made hilariously famous by a TeamCoco (Conan O'Brien) skit mocking the gold iPhone, but in all seriousness, the gold color option has turned into, well, a golden egg for Apple. It's apparently so popular that Apple will reportedly offer a gold color option for its next generation of 9.7-inch iPad models.

It's expected that Apple will announce the new iPad models this month, and according to Bloomberg, gold will be a color choice for the rear part of the chassis. This will be in addition to the same silver and gray options available on the current iPad Air.

Gold iPad
Companies like Goldgenie will sell you a gold iPad (or gold plate your existing one), albeit for a hefty price.

Will color make a difference? Apple sure hopes so, and with how its iPad sales have been slipping, the company is willing to try anything at this point. While still the leader in tablets, there has been a precipitous decline in the iPad's market share. According to data from International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple's iPad had a 40.2 percent share of the tablet market in the first quarter of 2013. A year later, that figure dropped down to 32.5 percent, and at last count (second quarter of 2014), the iPad owns a 26.9 percent share of the overall tablet market.

That's still enough for a first place finish, but for how long? In addition to competing with Android and Windows alternatives, Apple might be competing with itself. Both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sport bigger displays than any previous iPhone model, and with the iPhone 6 Plus considered a phablet, owners of the larger device may find that they don't need or want a tablet, even a gold colored one.
