PrimeSense Delivers 3D Sensing Technology To Project Natal

Microsoft's Project Natal might change gaming as we know it when it launches this holiday season, much like Nintendo's Wii did just a few years back. There's no question that a lot of technology has been involved in creating a system that could actually recognize human movements and transform them into console commands, and now PrimeSense is coming clean and saying that some of what makes Natal tick is due to their technology.

This marks the first time that Microsoft has gone public about any of the technology beneath Natal, and now we know that the 3D sensing behind it is thanks to a technology developed by PrimeSense. Ilan Spillinger, vice president of Xbox 360 hardware, said the following about the announcement: "We’ve seen tremendous excitement and anticipation for the arrival of ‘Project Natal’ this holiday. PrimeSense has delivered an important component to the technology, helping us deliver revolutionary controller-free entertainment experiences in the living room."

Natal was designed about the PrimeSensor reference design, which was recently showcased and will be on display during E3 later this year. Other reports are noting that PrimeSense technology may also find use in other market sectors, possibly in televisions or set-top boxes. The interesting part here is that PrimeSense has not been purchased by Microsoft, so PrimeSense is still free to sell their 3D sensing technology to other companies, possibly in areas other than console gaming. And yes PC gamers, we're looking in your direction. Could you imagine the next Left 4 Dead, using just your hands and feet? Talk about frightening.
