Opera Mini for iPhone Already Downloaded 1 Million Times

Well that was fast. According to Opera Software, the company's Opera Mini browser for the iPhone was downloaded more than one million times on its first day of availability in Apple's App Store. Three days later, the Safari alternative ranked as the number one iPhone app in the 22 featured Apple App Stores on their site.

"Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the Web on the iPhone - especially during heavy Web traffic," said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. "With any widely available and frequently downloaded Opera product, we are appreciative of all the feedback we are getting, as it helps us to continually improve our product and better meet the needs of our users."

Opera Software claims its mobile browser delivers up to six times the speed of other browsers, especially when there's a ton of network activity. A large reason for this is the server-side compression scheme, which also helps users on a pay-per-MB payment plan.

What mobile browser are you rocking on your smartphone or other mobile device, and what do you like (or don't like) about it?

Opera Mobile is what I be rocking. Heck of a lot better than Mini, but you take what you can get. I wonder if one day Opera will offer Mobile on the iPhone.

Seems like Opera Mini hit the ground running, I wonder what Apple thinks about these results? Seems like a catch 22 to me.

This just proves that even Apple users are demanding more universally based use.

It is kinda funny that now Apple must scramble to update the browsers that they develop, just so they can keep their strangle hold on their people.

I still have yet, to try Firefox or any other browser. Since everyone I seem to install one. I end up running into trouble with the Fire drives. So it is easier to just keep with Explorer so the windows environment doesn't have a hissy fit.

When it comes to a Smartphone, I still just have a good old fashion calling phone. Maybe when I get the EVO, then I will be more open to using other browsers. I am sure if I got an IPhone, I woudl use Opera, Yet most likely I will use whatever is on the EVO :)

The opera mini is really nothing for all these people to get happy over, it currently sucks more then safari in features. The speed in not so sure as i will most likely not care anyways :D.

I just hope the heard all know that opera Mini caches everything on its proxies including your https [SSL] data. In fact if I recall from other platforms that have Mini it send an Opera SSL cert instead of one from the actual website you are logging into. A similar practice is done on some corporate networks where they issue their own certs for SSL connections.
