New Slim and Sexy iMac Models Available November 30
Remember those super skinny iMac models Apple introduced in late October? Apple at the time said it would begin shipping its new iMacs in December, but the 21.5-inch model will actually be available to purchase starting November 30, 2012, the Cupertino company announced today. The 27-inch iMac is still scheduled to ship next month.
"Redesigned from the inside out, the new iMac packs high performance technology into an aluminum and glass enclosure that measures just 5 mm thin at its edge and features a re-engineered display that reduces reflection by 75 percent," Apple explains. "The new iMac includes 8GB of 1600 MHz memory, a 1TB hard drive, third generation quad-core Intel Core i5 processors that can be upgraded to Core i7, and the latest NVIDIA GeForce graphics processors that deliver up to 60 percent faster performance."
One of the most talked about features, however, is Apple's Fusion Drive option. Similar to a hybrid solid state drive, Apple's Fusion Drive is supposed to give customers the performance of flash and the capacity of a hard drive by combining 128GB of flash with a standard hard drive. The two come together to create a single storage volume. Performance is vastly improved by shuttling frequently used data to the flash portion and less frequently used bits over to the HDD portion. You can actually build one yourself, if you're so inclined.
The new 21.5-inch iMac will be available with an Intel Core i5 quad-core processor clocked at 2.7GHz and NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M graphics for $1,299, and with a 2.9GHz CPU and GT 650M GPU for $1,499. The 27-inch model starts at $1,799 with a quad-core Core i5 chip (2.9GHz) and GeForce GTX 660M GPU, and $1,999 for a 3.2GHz Core i5 processor and GTX 675MX GPU.
