Microsoft's Xbox 360 Stands Tall in the U.S., Outsells PS3 and Wii for 30 Straight Months

There was no better selling console in the U.S. last month than the Xbox 360. Microsoft sold 140,000 Xbox 360 consoles in June, outpacing Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii and Wii U platforms to take pole position. Of course, this is nothing new for the Xbox 360, which has been outselling the competition for 30 straight months now, according to The NPD Group.

Microsoft made the revelation in a blog post, adding that the total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in June (hardware, software, and accessories) reached $197 million, the most for any console in the U.S. Will that kind of success carry over to the Xbox One?


"Xbox One, which will launch this fall, has already seen impressive pre-order sales as consumers have signed up to be the first to receive the new system," Microsoft said. "In fact, Xbox One pre-sales are trending ahead of Xbox 360 during the same time period."

That's encouraging for Microsoft, especially since the Xbox One is priced at $500, a full $100 more than the PlayStation 4. It's priced that way because it comes with a second generation Kinect sensor. a definite gamble for a company that's become used to staying ahead of the competition in terms of sales.
