Microsoft's Xbox 360 Stands Tall in the U.S., Outsells PS3 and Wii for 30 Straight Months

There was no better selling console in the U.S. last month than the Xbox 360. Microsoft sold 140,000 Xbox 360 consoles in June, outpacing Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii and Wii U platforms to take pole position. Of course, this is nothing new for the Xbox 360, which has been outselling the competition for 30 straight months now, according to The NPD Group.

Microsoft made the revelation in a blog post, adding that the total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in June (hardware, software, and accessories) reached $197 million, the most for any console in the U.S. Will that kind of success carry over to the Xbox One?

Xbox One

"Xbox One, which will launch this fall, has already seen impressive pre-order sales as consumers have signed up to be the first to receive the new system," Microsoft said. "In fact, Xbox One pre-sales are trending ahead of Xbox 360 during the same time period."

That's encouraging for Microsoft, especially since the Xbox One is priced at $500, a full $100 more than the PlayStation 4. It's priced that way because it comes with a second generation Kinect sensor. a definite gamble for a company that's become used to staying ahead of the competition in terms of sales.

as much hate as microsoft gets it has made a good system and some console specific games to that have probably played a big factor in its sucess.

Its always been obvious that the Xbox 360 was the best overall console in this generation. Not sure who will win the next generation!

I can't speak to the Xbox 360 being a good console since I've never owned one but dig its wired controller on the PC.

the only reason the xbox 360 keeps outselling any other console, it's because the 360 breaks more often than any other console, causing users to buy a new one, that to me, sounds like ps3 has lasted me longer than the crapbox 360, the crapbox only lasted 1 damn year, and i rarely even turn it on, my ps3 will always be a #1 media console, for gaming, movies, tv, music, ect..... make a good console... not just release sooner...

I'd love to see some documentation on the failure rates of the two consoles if you have it readily available, Armando. Last I checked, as of last July, Xbox 360 and PS3 had similar failure rates.

Overall worldwide sales of all consoles puts PS3 in second place. And in weekly global sales the PS3 is in front. So even though in the USA the 360 is outselling the PS3, in this console cycle, Xbox came a close third, and the gap is expanding.

Which isn't bad when you think about it. PS3 came out a year later, and was grossly expensive. However, Sony did say it was a marathon not a sprint. Think they've proved their point.
