Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 Launched

Hello All.  I ntel’s has just launched their latest flagship desktop processor, the Core 2 Extreme QX6850, and we’ve got it on the test-bench at here HotHardware.com.  Here’s a snip:

“It took a small voltage bump to 1.45V in the BIOS to hit 3.73GHz.  To achieve this, we raised the FSB to 466MHz and dropped the multiplier to X8.  Once we hit our highest, stable clock speed, we were surprised how stable things were even with a relatively low cost standard HSF cooler.  We used an Artic Cooling Freezer 7 cooler to achieve these results.”

This chip shows the advances Intel continues to make with their 65nm manufacturing process. If they get 45nm manufacturing dialed in like this - and all indications are that they will - 3.5GHz and beyond withing the same power envelope is totally possible within the next year.
