Dell Ships Studio 14z Notebook, Starts At $649
As the name implies, the machine includes a 14" LED display with HD resolution (720p/900p), and the frame itself measures between .79" and 1.2" thick. Within, you'll find a 2.66GHz T9550 CPU (or a range of other Pentium Dual Core/Core 2 Duo chips), integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, a 1.3MP webcam, dual digital array microphones, a starting weight of 4.3lbs. and a 2.0-channel audio system.
Dell proclaims that this machine is the industry's first consumer notebook with FailSafe theft protection, which enables owners to track network information and the ISP location of the laptop when it connects to the Internet, and to remotely erase selected files/render the laptop useless until it's returned to its rightful owner. Of course, this won't stop anyone from taking it, but it'll sure make 'em think twice before taking another.
As with most every other machine in the Studio line, the 14z also arrives in a bevy of colors: Black Chain Link, Midnight Blue, Spring Green, Plum Purple, Ruby Red and Promise Pink (U.S. only). For each Promise Pink edition purchased, Dell will donate $5 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Not much, but a fine gesture anyway. The machine too comes with Dell Remote Access, which allows users to access content via their home network of personal computing devices including desktops, laptops, ultra-mobile devices, smart phones and web cameras.
Dell ships the 14z with a six-cell battery standard, but an optional eight-cell alternative promises nearly seven hours of battery life with the WLED display option. Wi-Fi is standard, though Bluetooth and WWAN are add-ons. An eSATA port is also included, along with PowerShare USB 2.0 ports that allow peripheral charging even when the machine isn't plugged in.
The Studio 14z is priced from $649 (U.S.) and is available to order now online and via phone in the United States and Canada. Dell's full press releases is copied below.
