Canon Trains Big Guns On Cheap Flatscreens
Canon and Toshiba found two old men to shake hands like they hate each other in front of a big old newfangled SED flatscreen TV, and everybody took their picture. They also found $1.7 billion dollars in one of their desk drawers and decided to build a great big factory in Japan and crank out enormous cheap flatscreens by 2008.
Canon Inc. and Toshiba Corp. are developing a new type of flat panels, which they say are thinner and consume less energy than the existing liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma televisions.
The production of the new surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) TVs would start at the end of 2007, and expand into full-scale in 2008, Kazunori Fukuma, head of the venture set up by Canon and Toshiba, said at Japan's biggest electronics trade show, where he presented a 55-inch full high-definition TV for the first time.
This means the folks currently manufacturing big flatscreens will try to cut costs and prices to compete, and let's hope by the time all this shakes out, a 100" flatpanel high definition television set will cost less than the rental fee for the bad movie you're watching on it.
