Comcast Xfinity Platinum Internet Service Takes Aim at Verizon’s Quantum FiOS
We knew that Comcast was readying a new Internet service tier to compete with Verizon’s Quantum FiOS (300Mbps down, 65Mbps up, $205 per month), and now we have confirmation and some more details.
Comcast announced Xfinity Platinum Internet, which promises almost exactly the same performance as Verizon, with 305Mbps down and 65Mbps up, and although the company made no mention of pricing, several reports have it pegged at a hair under 300 bucks a month?
Is that a lot for speedy Internet? Yes. Is it substantially pricier than Verizon’s $205 per month offering? Double yes. Comcast hopes that the extras it’s throwing in--including free Xfinity Signature Support, 24/7 tech support and a personal consultant, a secure wireless gateway, and the Constant Guard Security Suite--will make it worth the customers’ dime.
The first folks to get a crack at the new service tier are in the Northeast in markets including Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, D.C., and New Jersey.
The announcement came with another treat: Comcast is doubling the speeds of two of its Internet tiers at no cost to customers. Xfinity Blast! and Extreme 50 speeds are now up to 50Mbps and 105Mbps, respectively.
