University of Kansas Spends $3,000 on Naughty Domain Names

You know exactly the kind of content you're likely to find at and, and so do officials at Kansas University, which is why they're making a mad dash to grab illicit web domains. No, KU isn't going to cash in on the adult entertainment industry, it's just trying to prevent pornographic webmasters from being able to exploit the university's name.

Kansas University is just one of many schools and businesses outside of the adult entertainment industry buying up recently released .xxx domains, the Associated Press reports. Collectively, AP says they've grabbed hold of tens of thousands of .xxx domains solely as a preventative measure.

The ICM Registry, which is in charge of .xxx domain names, made them available to the general public earlier this week, but has been selling them to companies for the past couple of months. The dirty domains run about $100 a pop and quickly add up when you're a business or school trying to purchase domains simply to sit on them.

Ironically enough, it's the adult entertainment industry that's been one of the strongest opponents to .xxx domains. One of their beefs is with the high registration fees, which have been likened to extortion.

"LOL, well I still think someone can grab KUcoeds . xxx and KUgonewild. xxx . Still, is it that wild on campus that a lot of Kansas U chicks are participating in soft and hard core pron? Sounds like I went to the wrong college"

they bought - however they plan on rolling out a website with that one...

Well... wouldn't that be lowercased? As in sexy crazy educators; speaking of which.

*me thinks up new porn enterprise idea*

This is a good move, it keeps ku out of bad press and helps fight the stupids. Every company needs to do this.

Wrong, what the university is doing is stupid. Instead of wasting money on all those xxx domains it's better off spending the money on helping students and making education better. No one would go to a xxx domain expecting anything other than porn materials.

as soon as I heard of the xxx domain I thought about going out and buying a ton of them. What better way to make a quick $?

I agree with KreepyK...they should stop spending money on useless things. No wonder tution costs are always going up, the government is stressing EDUCATION yet no one can afford it or is in massive debt when they get out and aren't guaranteed a JOB at all. Makes no sense.

$3000 isn't much money for a school like the U. of Kansas. I think it's a smart move by them to protect their name and reputation. More well-known schools should follow suit.

3000 dollars is the cost of 1 class for a student so who cares if they spent this much on 30 domains to prevent miss use of their name. Definitely smart of them to do this though I don't think it would really matter.

I think it's a smart move, and who knows maybe down the road they can sell them off? lol (Just kidding) But seriously, it's a good investment if their looking to protect their school's image, and like the report says, they aren't the only school (or business) doing it... they've sold "tens of thousands of .xxx domains solely as a preventative measure."

It'd be like me wanting to buy up (myname).xxx just so someone else doesn't, to protect my own image/name. I can definitely see their reasoning behind this move.

KreepyK 3 years ago

How does buying a (myname).xxx protect your own image/name?

Aoshi 3 years ago

I guess. But the internet is stupid. I wouldn't care if someone made one for me. It would be fake. Granted, it would be very bad if it got too popular. So it works both ways. They are just protecting themselves.

When I see the acronym KU, it is Københavns universitet, which has nearly 20 % more students than the University of Kansas (35000 as opposed to 30000), that comes to mind. Perhaps these two institutions can bid up the price of these spicy domains ? Or, more likely, the regents in Copenhagen will not be particularly concerned by the .xxx sites and will abstain from bidding ; perhaps their counterparts in Lawrence could emulate their indifference and save a little money which could be better spent on other projects ?...

Couldnt they just sue for misuse of the uni name if it ever came to it?

I think its stupid. Even if someone did register a "sexy" domain that includes"KU" in it, I dont see how thats damaging their image. People are such babies nowadays, and really need to get over stuff like this. If I saw some KUsexystudents site or something on the internet that wouldn't make me say "OMG NO WAY IM GOING TO THAT UNIVERSITY"

infact, I think it may have the opposite effect. It might lure some people it, it may just make some people laugh and giggle, and in turn make this university stick in their minds, and then end up going to this university.
