HGST Thinks You Need 10TB Hard Drives For Your Pr0, Err Critical Files
We've come a long way since the days when hard drives were measured in megabytes. Underscoring that point is the industry's first 10TB enterprise-class HDD, the host-managed Ultrastar Archive Ha10 SMR built by HGST, a division of Western Digital. HGST says the capacious HDD is intended of next-generation archive applications.
The 10TB monster is a helium-based drive, the third of its kind by HGST in the past two years. HGST says it's deployed over a million helium-based HelioSeal HDDs to date and is super confident in the technology's reliability. In the task the new drive was purpose built for -- active archive duties -- HGST says the Ultrastar Archive Ha10 is the market leader in reliability and data integrity, with a rated MTBF (mean time between failure) of 2 million hours.
Does the world truly need a 10TB hard drive? There's no doubt about it, as far as HGST is concerned.
"Today, many hyperscale cloud providers are discovering that most of their active archive applications are already sequential, creating the ideal environment for SMR HDDs to thrive. The capacity enterprise HDD market is adapting to this shift, creating demand for purpose built drives, making the Ha10 an ideal solution due to its capacity, data integrity and desired predictable performance," HGST said.
HGST figures that active archive/deep archive applications represent anywhere from 20 percent to more than a third of the data being stored today. And within the next five years, HGST sees that stat growing to more than 50 percent of the market.
The 10TB drive is available for SATA 6Gbps and SAS 6Gbps setups, both of which are 3.5-inch form factors. Each version sports a 256MB buffer, 7200 RPM spindle speed, and sustained read and write transfer rates of 157MB/s and 68MB/s, respectively.
