File this one under "Oh yes they did!," because Nintendo has gone and tried to trademark the popular phrase "It's on like Donkey Kong." The request was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office recently, and who knows if it will be granted or not. However, this isn't the first time Nintendo has tried to trademark a phrase associated with its game characters. Nintendo also tried to trademark "Gotta Catch 'Em All," which as you know is tied into the company's Pokemon cash cow. But what you might not be aware of is that Nintendo didn't create the phrase "It's on like Donkey Kong," which GameStop says was popularized by rapper Ice Cube when he used it in his 1992 track "Now I Gotta... Not all of the early reviews of Sony's PlayStation Move motion sensing controllers have been glowing, but that hasn't stopped gamers from flocking to the new hardware. According to Sony, more than a million Move devices in North and Latin America have sold in the first 30 days since launch . "Retail demand is incredibly strong and we're working hard to keep the product in stock" said SCEA chief executive Jack Tretton. "We believe we are on target to meet our end of year goals and expect sales to increase as our publishers and developers continue to update popular titles and introduce new games." Move wands cost $50 a pop, with Sony charging another $30 for a smaller complementary controller for... Read more...

To say that Steam is doing well would be like saying Bill Gates has a little bit of money saved up. You think? Steam isn't just doing well, it's growing at a phenomenal rate. According to Valve, there are now over 30 million active accounts on Steam, and growing. "Steam is on track to record the biggest year in its six year history," said Gabe Newell, president of Valve. "The year has marked major development advances to the platform with the introduction of support for Mac titles, the Steam Wallet and in-game item buying support, and more. We believe the growth in accounts, sales, and player numbers is completely tied to this work and we plan to continue to develop the platform to offer more... Read more...
If you're looking for an app to show off your iPad, your search is over. At yesterday's Apple event, Epic Games announced a new game for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch called Project Sword, an action RGP being made exclusively for iOS. Minutes later, Epic Games went and released a tech demo as a free app available via iTunes that lets you explore the castle environment in awesome detail. It's called Epic Citadel, and it's an 82.2MB download powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 3 technology. We gave the tech demo a spin and, well, let's just say we're officially excited about the future of gaming on tablets and other mobile devices. Let's forget for a moment that this is only available for iOS --... Read more...

"Kinect for Xbox 360 offers tremendous entertainment value for the whole family," said Dennis Durkin, Xbox 360 chief operating officer. Word to the wise - if plan on picking up Microsoft's new slimmed down (and sleek looking) Xbox 360 console, be sure not to move the console while playing, loading, or otherwise spinning a game disc. If you do, it could very well be the last time that game disc will load. Of course, you don't need to take our word for it, or even Microsoft's, who put a warning label on one of the new Xbox 360 consoles at E3. You could instead find out the hard way, as Destructoid.com's Nick Chester did when he innocently lifted the console while it was loading an Alan Wake game. The deed was caught on video, and you can clearly hear the grinding sound as soon as he lifts it up. After ejecting the disc to assess... Read more...

For years, us PC folks have pointed and laughed our Mac brethren who, for the most part, have been gimped when it comes to gaming. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule, but c'mon, if you're a gamer, your choices have traditionally come down to a Windows-based PC or a dedicated console. Valve set out to change this dichotomy between gaming and Macs when it released a version of its Steam platform compatible with Apple hardware, and you know what? So far it's working. According to Valve, during the first week of sales on the Steam service, more than 11 percent of all Steam purchases were for the Mac. Part of this we can chalk up to the usually flurry that accompanies a new product release, but... Read more...
Short and to the point, Valve this week announced it would be porting its Steam platform over to the Mac next month. And when we say short and to the point, we really mean it. All the developer had to say was "Valve today announced the public release of Steam for the Mac is May 12. Please stayed tuned for more information." No "Hi, how ya doing" or "Hey, we're going to include some exciting features, let us tell you all about them." No screenshots or teaser videos either, but that's okay because those have already been leaked to the Web (see here). So in less than two weeks, our Mac-powered brethren will enjoy the same digital distribution scheme that us PC (as in, Windows-based) folk have been... Read more...
Talk about an unexpected pay day. Tanner Sandlin of Austin, Texas raked in $31,600 on Ebay for an old Atari 2600 game that was tucked away in his garage. It's the second highest ever paid for a videogame, and much more than the $5 or $10 Sandlin said he paid for it when he was about 10 years old. So why did it fetch so much? The game, called Air Raid, is extremely rare. Counting the one Sandlin sold, there are only 13 known copies, and his was the only one that came in its original box. It also didn't hurt matters that Sandlin was the original owner and had the foresight to enlist an Atari expert to confirm the game's authenticity. "I clearly remember buying this game back in 1984 or 1985," Sandlin... Read more...
We've pretty much come to accept that every once in awhile, some analyst or game maker will predict the demise of the PC as a viable gaming platform, citing higher profits and a larger install base as reasons for focusing entirely on the console. They're wrong, of course - PC gaming isn't going anywhere, but are consoles a dying breed?Very doubtful, but don't tell that to Hideo Kojima, a Japanese videogame maker whose "Metal Gear Solid" games have sold more than 27 million copies. Nevertheless, Kojima envisions a time not too far away when players will no longer be tied to consoles."In the near future, we'll have games that don't depend on any platform," Kojima said at a recent news conference....
