Whoa!  I've only been offline for about 8 hours, and already our news box is chock full of goodies!  For a geek like me, there's not much better than waking up to a healthy sampling of hardware related articles.  I just brewed a fresh pot of coffee, slammed down a pastry and some toast, and now I'm going to settle in for some good reading.  When I'm done with that, I'm going to button up a review of Asus' excellent Radon X800 Pro!  I figure some of you might want to do the same (minus that part about writing a review), so here's enough hardware news to keep you busy for most of the morning - just don't spill any coffee on your keyboard...  Shuttle's XPC SK83G SFF... Good morning all.  JeffB stopping in as we say good bye to another work week and hello to the weekend.  My wife and I, recent residents of North Carolina, enjoyed a nice little pool party in our community last night with a live reggae band and good food and drink.  The carribean tunes seemed quite appropriate with the general theme being sunny and hot. Tomorrow we get to check out a local pig roast that is an annual tradition that brings in 15,000 people each year.  It's definitely a different world down here compared to New York, but one thing is certain, these folks like to eat!  They are also a hefty community of techies too, with the Research Triangle being home to... Welcome back HotHardware fans!  Today's announcement by NVIDIA regarding their new MXM (Mobile PCI eXpress Module) initiative has generated quite a bit of interest.  So much interest that we were able to get a statement from ATi on the topic.  Here's a direct "cut-and-paste" from the correspondence...   •"Industry Standard Module" - while the concept is great, this is not what is being proposed. An industry standard module would be created through the creation of a working group comprised of OEMs, ODMs, graphics vendors, etc - an industry standard comes through collaboration - that is not what has been done here (ATI and others were never consulted),...   We recently had a chance to talk with representatives from NVIDIA regarding a new initiative they've spearheaded, with the goal of bringing a consistent graphics interface to PCI Express equipped notebooks.  Historically, the graphics processors used in laptops / notebooks have been impossible, or prohibitively expensive, to upgrade.  A few companies, like Alienware and Toshiba, have recently introduced upgradeable notebooks, but they each use different standards.  Alienware's parts can't be used in Toshiba's notebooks, and vice-versa.  The video cards used in desktop systems, however, can be easily upgraded because there is a consistent interface standard (i.e. AGP)... Home Grown Networking and Modems from ActionTec Electronics https://www.actiontec.com   Not long ago, "Home Networking" was a segment of the PC and Peripheral Market that did not even exist. However along with the huge success of the Personal Computer and the Internet within the mainstream and "Family/SOHO" (Small Office/Home Office) space, came the Multi-PC Household. Soon, for today's average family, one PC was not enough. It was as if the "Great Telephone Line Battle" was raged again but this time on a different precious commodity, "Computer Time". Now instead of hogging the phone lines for voice calls, Teens are sucking up MHz. and bandwidth in the Chat Rooms and Web Pages of the Internet.... Read more...
