ATI released a new version of their Linux proprietary drivers today, version 8.28.8. This new version is ATI's first unified 32bit-64bit driver installer for Linux. It automatically recognizes which CPU architecture is being used and installs the appropriate driver. Other new features include display switching support for IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad products, retaining display device state between restarts, and support for the ATI Radeon Xpress 1200, 1250 and 1300. The new driver release also fixes the bug that prevented an image from being displayed when a Dell Widescreen UltraSharp 2405FPW was connected via DVI on a system using the X Server. Hey folks, just thought I'd remind you all that Nvidia will be posting some new drivers tomorrow(Forceware 84.25), which should provide some performance improvements to the new Elder Scrolls, Oblivion. I picked up my copy earlier today, and while it runs decent, any kind of performance improvement is welcomed. Nvidia hasn't elaborated on what kind of boost we'll see from the drivers though. Another month, another driver release. This month, ATI's recent release seems aimed at fixing a host of various driver bugs. A longstanding bug found in Nvidia's last few driver releases has yet to be fixed. Their "Direct Access" feature which allowed users to control their monitors from the ForceWare control panel still suffers from what some consider a serious, and potentially hardware damaging bug. Nvidia has updated their driver page with new 81.98 ForceWare drivers, which have removed they Direct Access feature. We've had some big game releases this month, and today's release is... F.E.A.R.! From what I've heard, the game will take about 10 hours to get through(which I personally find disappointing), however it's supposed to be one incredible ride. In what seems to be becoming a popular trend, a patch has already been released for the game, less than a week(or day) after it's release. BW comes back from his sunny Caribbean Honeymoon, only to test out the latest addition to the ATi Radeon family, the Radeon X800 XL w/ 512MB of memory on board.  Life is tough sometimes kid...    So we decided to actually make him WORK for a living and re-test the new board with ATi's just now released Catalyst 5.6 driver suite, which brings new features and increased performance to the entire ATi product offering. Over the past few months, the ATI Radeon X800XL has built up a reputation for being one of the best buys in high-end PC graphics. A single-slot card, that's got relatively low power requirements, street prices hovering around $275 (give or take a few bucks) and performance that rivals flagship cards from both ATI and NVIDIA, is sure to please a large audience of potential buyers.
