Samsung To Unveil Flexible OLED Dual-Display Galaxy X Smartphone Concept Soon This Year

Will Samsung soon unveil a flexible OLED smartphone? Lately the answer to that question may be as reliable as a Magic 8 ball. One source, however, has leaked that Samsung will likely reveal its dual-screen smartphone prototype sometime in the next few months.

The dual-screen smartphone may be a preliminary prototype for Samsung’s supposedly bendable smartphone, the Galaxy X. Recent patents revealed that the the middle of the phone is essentially a hinge that allows the entire device to fold in half. Ideally the Galaxy X would only incorporate one OLED screen.

According to an anonymous source, “Samsung seems to be testing the waters with the dual-screen device to gather ideas about its upcoming foldable phone.” Rumor has it that Samsung has revved up its research and development in order release a small supply of Galaxy X smartphones by the end of this year. They have supposedly order parts for roughly 2,000-3,000 units.

Officials at Samsung have yet to confirm this rumor and have in fact recently tried to squash any anticipation. Kim Tae-woong, Samsung Display’s principal engineer remarked at the Display TechSalon in Seoul, South Korea that “Because the bezel-free display currently sells well, we still have enough time to develop bendable display. The technology is expected to be mature around 2019”.

Samsung is also reportedly working on the Galaxy S9. It is of course too early to determine many of the specifications, but it has been reported that likely the S9 will also be available as 5.8 and 6.2-inch screen models. There's also a high probability that Samsung will have plenty of time to add Synaptics' through-the-glass Natural ID FS9100 optical fingerprint authentication system that missed the cut with the Galaxy S8/Galaxy S8+.

Samsung fans are highly anticipaing the release of the Galaxy S8/Galaxy S8+. The Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch display, while the Galaxy S8+ pushes the screen size to 6.2 inches. Both displays are Quad HD+ Super AMOLED with a resolution of 2960x1440. Samsung also includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor running at 2.35GHz, a 12MP dual-pixel design camera with optical image stabilization, and "Dual Audio" that allows you to connect two Bluetooth devices to your phone at once and play audio to those devices simultaneously. The Galaxy S8/Galaxy S8+ will be available on April 21st.
