Here’s Gigabyte’s Aorus TRX40 3rd Gen AMD Threadripper Motherboard

Gigabyte Aorus TRX40 Motherboard
Well, look what we have here—a teaser image of a mysterious motherboard from Gigabyte. It's assumed this one will carry the Aorus branding, and if we direct our attention to the socket, we can further speculate this is a board intended for AMD's upcoming third-generation Ryzen Threadripper processors due out next month.

Details are in short supply here, but the socket in the image looks the same as AMD's existing TR4 socket found on current generation X399 motherboards. At this stage of the game, it would not make much sense to tease another current generation Threadripper motherboard, so what we are almost definitely looking at is a Gigabyte Aorus TRX40 board based on an upcoming TR4+ socket design (incidentally, MSI recently mistakenly confirmed an upcoming TRX40 motherboard of its own, for third-gen Threadripper CPUs).

It's not yet clear how exactly TR4+ will differ from TR4—rumor has it the configuration of the pins will be a little different. Nothing has been officially announced, though, so all we have are leaks, rumors, and speculation to go on.

Looking beyond the socket, this appears to be an extended ATX (E-ATX) motherboard, the same form factor as the X399 Aorus Xtreme. We can see four reinforced PCI Express x16 slots flanked by three covered M.2 ports, and eight DDR4 DIMM slots for quad-channel memory support. And of course RGB lighting is present.

Leaked Third Generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper Models And Preliminary Specs

AMD Ryzen Threadripper
AMD confirmed plans to formerly introduce its third-generation Threadripper lineup in November, starting with a 24-core/48-thread processor. Recent leaks have pointed to that part being a Threadripper 3960X model.

It's been rumored there will be three models introduced on November 5, including...
  • Threadripper 3990X: Either 48 cores and 96 threads, or 64 cores and 128 threads
  • Threadripper 3970X: 32 cores and 64 threads
  • Threadripper 3960X: 24 cores and 48 threads
We're speculation on the core and thread counts of the two higher end models, based on the starting point (24 cores and 48 threads on the Threadripper 3960X). If the leaked information is accurate, the Threadripper 3960X and Threadripper 3970X will both be available to purchase on November 19, while the Threadripper 3990X will make a retail debut in January 2020.
