Lenovo Unveils Powerhouse P720 And P920 Workstations Supporting Dual Xeon Platinum CPUs

Lenovo has pulled the wraps off a pair of new workstation PCs that aim directly at the folks out there who need lots of power and performance to make it through their workday. The machines include the ThinkStation P920 and P720. The most powerful of the duo is the P290 and it is crammed full of hardware with options running dual Intel Xeon Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze CPUs.  

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations is pre-loaded and the machine is also certified for use with Redhat Linux. If your workload requires you to render 3D models or perform other GPU-intensive workloads, the P920 can be fitted with up to three NVIDIA Quadro GP100 or P6000 GPUs. Lenovo will fit the machine with up to 2TB of DDR4, 2666MHz RAM with 16 available DIMM slots and support for both RDIMM and LRDIMM.

The chassis has space for up to 12 internal drives, with up to two M.2 drives, six 3.5" drives or ten 2.5" drives. The drives can be in RAID 0,1,5, 6, or 10. Power comes from a 1400W PSU (92% efficiency). The mainboard uses the Intel C621 chipset and there is plenty of connectivity. You get four USB 3.1 ports on the front and four more on the rear along with a pair of USB 2.0 ports, serial port, parallel port, PS/2 port, Ethernet, line in, line out, mic in, eSATA, and a Firewire port. WiFi is integrated and a memory card reader and optical drive are integrated.

The P720 is the smaller of the pair and it can be fitted with the same dual Intel Xeon Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze CPUs. It also runs Windows 10 Pro for Workstations with Ubuntu pre-loaded and Redhat Linux certified. Since this machine is smaller, it can hold only a pair of NVIDIA Quadro GP100 or P6000 GPUs. P720 buyers can get up to 384GB of DDR4 2666 RAM with 12 DIMM slots available.

The chassis can hold up to 12 drives with a pair of M.2 drives, up to six 3.5" drives or up to ten 2.5" drives. The machine also supports RAID 0,1,5,6, or 10. Buyers can opt for a 690W or 900W PSU and the rig runs the Intel C621 chipset. Connectivity includes a quartet of USB 3.1 ports on front along with a mic and headphone port. Rear connectivity include four USB 3.1 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, serial port, parallel port, eSATA, Firewire, and more. WiFi is integrated and the machine has several expansion slots inside. Both PCs will be available in late October at undisclosed price.
