2018 Ford Mustang GT Eats Porsche 911 Carreras For Lunch With Sub 4 Second 0 to 60 Time

It’s that last point that bring us to the biggest news surrounding the 2018 Mustang — its performance. Ford has announced that the new Mustang GT is going to make an incredible 460 horsepower from its 5.0-liter V8 engine, which is a crazy amount of power for a garden variety “stock” pony car. This is an increase of 25 horsepower compared to the 2017 Mustang GT and 10 more than the Chevrolet Camaro SS. Torque increases from 400 lb-ft to 420 lb-ft.

When paired with the all-new 10-speed automatic transmission, Ford is introducing what it calls “Drag Strip Mode”. According to Ford, when in this mode, engine torque doesn’t taper off when the gears are shifting, which allows you to generate peak engine torque and horsepower throughout the run. What this means is that that with Drag Strip Mode enabled, the Mustang GT can rocket from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. That absolutely mind-boggling for a car that will have a base MSRP that hovers around $35,000.

If you’d prefer to have your Mustang turbocharged, and would like to save a few thousand dollars as a result, there’s also good news for the EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. While 310 horsepower is still at your disposal, torque has increase from 320 lb-ft to 340 lb-ft. Like the Mustang GT, the EcoBoost Mustang also benefits from Drag Strip Mode when paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission. With this combination, the 2018 EcoBoost Mustang can hit 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.

It’s almost hard to imagine that a four-cylinder Mustang is putting up numbers that are competitive with a Mustang GT from a decade ago. Given how strong the EcoBoost Mustang is, we don’t think that anyone will miss the old 3.7-liter V6, which has been dropped for the 2018 model year.

In addition to the powertrain and performance update, there are also other tweaks like a new 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument panel, Ford Sync 3 infotainment system (with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support), and a new MagneRide suspension option.
