HP’s Refreshed Spectre x2 2-in-1 And Envy 13 Laptop Deliver Premium Surface Competition

It seems as though every PC OEM wants deliver a new “Surface killer”, and Hewlett-Packard is the latest to step up to the plate with its newly upgraded Spectre x2. The Spectre x2 is first and foremost a tablet that is dominated by its 12.3-inch 3000x2000 display (which is an upgrade from the previous 1920x1280 unit).

The tablet is constructed of CNC-machined aluminum, and adds a premium touch with a copper kickstand. Versatility is the name of the game with the Spectre x2, and it is available with a detachable keyboard that connects magnetically, and will maintain its position in any operating mode. The full-size premium keyboard is also constructed out of aluminum and is complemented by a glass trackpad.

When it comes to power, HP has ditched the Intel Core M-based processors in favor of full-fledged Core i5 and Core i7 processors coupled with Iris Plus graphics. Up to 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM is supported, and you can fatten the tablet up with a 1TB PCIe SSD. HP has replaced the full-size USB 3.0 ports with two USB-C ports, and the company even includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter in the box to accommodate your “legacy” devices (pay attention, Apple). Also included are a combo audio jack and a microSD slot.

HP says that the Spectre x2 lasts up to 8 hours on a charge, however, if you run low on juice you can get a 50 percent charge restored in just 30 minutes.

The Spectre x2 will be available in June with a starting price of $999.

For those of you that prefer a full-blown notebook instead of a dealing with a tablet and a detachable keyboard, there’s also the refreshed Elite 13. The Elite 13 now features thinner displays bezels and retains its Kaby Lake Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Base systems are equipped with a 128GB PCIe SSD, 8GB of RAM and a 1.3-inch 1920x1080 display. The 2.72-pound notebook also delivers up to 14 hours of battery life in mixed-use situations, which is impressive in this size class.

The Envy 13 will also be available in June, and has a base price of $1,049.
