Tech journalist by day, badass biker by night, and a 24/7 Boston sports fan, Paul Lilly epitomizes the archetype of the modern day geek. You won’t ever catch Paul wearing a pocket protector or suspenders, but you might find him cruising down the highway on two-wheels wearing an Oregon Trail t-shirt, or sticking his head in a home brewed PC while donning a do-rag or Celtics jersey. Like so many from his generation, the Commodore 64 seduced him into the titillating world of computers, and through the years, he’s courted a number of OSes and platforms from DOS on up to Windows 8. Paul covers the news beat and reviews, and is a general wiseguy who keeps the mood light. He’s also a seasoned freelance writer whose work has appeared in Maximum PC, PC World, Computer Shopper, and a number of other online and print publications.

Sometimes I get a hankering for a juicy burger, and if I happen to pass by a Burger King, a Whopper (with extra pickles, don't @me) will suffice. It looks like I'm not the only one. Apparently the Autopilot feature in Tesla vehicles can confuse circular Burger King restaurant signs with stop signs, and will slow down... Read more...
AMD has been killing it on the CPU side with its evolving Zen architecture, and based on a barrage of past leaks and rumors, Zen 3 will keep the momentum going. On the graphics side, AMD has more work to do. It's upcoming RDNA 2 architecture has the potential to shake things up, but it's too early to tell. And with... Read more...
LG on Thursday launched two sets of wireless earphones, one of which comes with a slim "UVnano" charging case that zaps germs and bacteria away with ultraviolet (UV) light, as its name implies. According to LG, this eliminates 99.9 percent of E. coli and S. aureus from the non-toxic, hypoallergenic silicone ear gel... Read more...
It was nearly two months when Intel's graphics boss, Raja Koduri, posted a photo on Twitter that teased an upcoming data center GPU, and boy was it a big slice of silicon. Fast forward to today and Koduri is at it again, this time with another shot of what looks to be the same GPU, plus one that is even bigger, and... Read more...
Nothing lasts forever, folks. Not the supposed 'Curse of the Bambino' that prevented the Boston Red Sox from winning a World Series title after the team traded away Babe Ruth, not Tom Brady's reign in New England, and not Toys R Us being the neighborhood toy store. Oh, and if another example is needed, Olympus is... Read more...
In the rush to plug up security holes and introduce new features, it is not uncommon for Microsoft's updates to inadvertently break things. We have covered numerous instances of this over the past several weeks. Here is one more you can add to the pile—there is an apparent bug in Microsoft's Mail and Calendar app that... Read more...
Microsoft's team of software engineers have plenty to keep themselves busy with, following recent updates to Windows 10. There are numerous issues affecting the May 2020 Update for Windows 10, but also a handful of problems introduced by separate security patches rolled out this month. One of them is causing some... Apple's recent announcement that it has begun a two-year transition phase to move away from using Intel's CPUs in favor of its own custom ARM-based silicon in future Macs came as somewhat of a surprise, save for the rumors that emerged just ahead of the reveal. In light of the news, what is less surprising is that... Read more...
It is a good thing Microsoft opted to slow play the roll out of its May 2020 Update (build 2004) for Windows 10, otherwise it could have ended up another train wreck, like the October 2018 Update (build 1809) that caused so many problems a couple of years ago. Adding to the growing list of problems with the latest... Read more...
High-end smartphones carry uptown prices, with some flagships commanding north of $1,000. You could buy a decent gaming laptop for less than what some of the top phones cost. Even OnePlus, the Never Settle brand, has not been immune to rising smartphone prices. However, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has said once again that a... Read more...
We have been hearing about massive capacity hard drives in the neighborhood of 18TB (and even higher) for several months now, but they have remained elusive products. Not anymore, apparently. An online retailer in the UK is now accepting orders for Western Digital's 18TB and 16TB Gold HDDs, neither of which have... Read more...
All eyes in the streaming space are on Tyler "Ninja" Blevins following Microsoft's surprise announcement that Mixer is transitioning to Facebook Gaming. The decision to effectively shutter Mixer comes less than a year after Microsoft lured Ninja away from Twitch, reportedly paying him around $30 million to stream... Read more...
A little over five weeks ago, NVIDIA officially introduced its long-anticipated Ampere GPU architecture to the server and high performance computing (HPC) markets. We are still waiting for Ampere to manifest in consumer graphics cards, like the GeForce RTX 3090 and GeForce RTX 3080. Meanwhile, NVIDIA anticipates... Read more...
You can probably stop hoping for a Super Mario Run 2, because barring a sudden change in fortune and/or strategy, it does not look like Nintendo is super interested in mobile gaming. Sure, at one point it was, with hopes of cashing in on a lucrative market. But following the launch of the Switch console and recent... Read more...
Rumors have been swirling about a second generation Galaxy Fold 2 device for several months now. Unless it has all been a bunch of hogwash up to this point, the Galaxy Fold 2 will sport a bigger display than the first generation model. Hopefully it will arrive without the design hiccups as well, but either way, it is... Read more...
Apple today is kicking off its 31st Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), in which the company will give a state of union on its various software platforms (iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS), host over 100 engineering sessions, and presumably will make some exciting announcements. Ahead of the event, a string... Read more...
Ampere is going to be a beast when it arrives in consumer PCs, according to the latest leaked benchmark discovery. Over at 3DMark, there is a private listing for an unnamed NVIDIA graphics card, which is likely a GeForce RTX 3090 or GeForce RTX 3080 of some sort, and it blows a typical GeForce RTX 2080 Ti out of the... Go ahead and mark your calendars, just be sure to use a pencil or an erasable pen (and not permanent market), because it looks as though Intel's upcoming Tiger Lake processors will be arriving on July 27. That is the date a pair of Acer Swift 5 laptops with Tiger Lake hardware are slated to launch, according to a... Read more...
Earlier this week, AMD treated to Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro to a GPU upgrade, with the introduction of the Radeon Pro 5600M. At least for now, the Radeon Pro 5600M is exclusive to the MacBook Pro, but is there any reason for Windows users to be jealous? That depends on you feel about a new set of benchmark... Read more...
Billy Mitchell is perhaps the most polarizing figure in the history of arcade gaming, particularly as a sport where legitimately obtained high scores on original cabinet hardware carries with it a bit of fame and recognition. And in some cases, a bit of controversy as well. Adding to it, Guinness World Records has... Read more...
A prominent leaker has spilled the beans on the upcoming Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, posting some interesting specifications and a set of images, though probably not of the actual handset. They are actual product images, not renders or the usual crop of poor quality, blurry photographs that all too often adorn these kinds... Read more...
Death and taxes are certainties, but if you want to add a third inevitability to the list, it would be this: more Ampere-based GeForce RTX graphics card rumors. Those are going to play out until NVIDIA finally unveils whatever it has up its sleeve. As it were, the latest rumor roundup highlights supposed... Read more...
