The last time that Sony issued a major update for the PlayStation 4 game console was when update 4.5 landed back in March. That system update added Boost Mode to the PlayStation 4 Pro among other things. Firmware Update 5.0 is incoming, and it empowers PS4 Pro gamers with the ability to stream via Twitch at 1080p and 60fps. These details have come not from Sony, but from leaked patch notes that were published. The update is expected to launch for all gamers later this month, but an exact launch date is unknown. The update for Twitch streaming isn't all that update 5.0 will bring to the table.... Read more...
During a Square Enix-hosted panel involving the developers of the Dragon Quest series, much was revealed about the series' upcoming plans, and if you're a PlayStation 4 owner in Japan, you happen to get the best of everything. Dragon Warrior (AKA: Dragon Quest) for the NES Compared to the games of today, the earliest Dragon Quest games (known as Dragon Warrior in North America) are as primitive as can be, but they still have enormous charm. After all, the original Dragon Quest came out at a time when most people didn't understand the concept of an RPG, so despite its simplicity, it captured the... Read more...
Sony has a reputation for being feisty when it comes to its PlayStation hardware, especially when users try to mod things. Nobody knows that better than George Hotz, the infamous PlayStation 3 modder who was sued by Sony for jailbreaking the console (the two reached a settlement in 2011). Fast forward to today and Sony is on a mission to keep its PlayStation 4 console locked down. That not only includes trying to remove every instance of of the PS4's software development kit (SDK) from the web, but also terminating any discussions on it, or so it seems. It all started a few weeks ago when version... Read more...

If you have ever felt the desire to play PlayStation 4 games, but don’t want to plunk down $300 (or more) for the console when you already have a beastly gaming PC, Sony understands your dilemma. PS4 games are now available via Sony’s PlayStation Now game streaming service, which is turning out to be the console gaming equivalent of Netflix. Games can be streamed either to a PS4 console or to a Windows computer. You don’t have to worry about fiddling with Blu-ray discs or even downloading/installing the game (as with Xbox Game Pass) — games are simply streamed at the press of a button as... Read more...
There is always that one dissenter who ruins the fun for everyone else. When it comes to gaming, that dissenter is Sony. In a perfect world, it would not matter which gaming platform you pledge your alliance to, cross-platform play would be possible among them all. That is something Microsoft and publishers have been pushing for, though Sony is refusing to participate in the fun by blocking cross-platform play on the PlayStation 4. Image Source: Flickr (- EMR -) Let us back up for a moment. During a media briefing at E3, Microsoft announced that cross-platform support was being added to Minecraft,... Read more...
The console wars between Sony and Microsoft are reaching a fever pitch with both companies making a play for 4K gaming. As to where things stand now, Sony has the lead in hardware sales—the Japanese technology behemoth announced that it has sold more than 60.4 million PlayStation 4 consoles to consumers since it launched over three years in November 2013. That is around double the number of estimated Xbox One console sales. Sony also said that software sales are booming. Led by hit titles such as Horizon: Zero Dawn, Sony notes that PS4 software sales have topped 487.8 million copies, which includes... Read more...

And if you're a PlayStation 4 owner, you're also getting a free trial for some of EA's games on PS4.The free trial is EA's way of thanking gamers for participating in a recent Play to Give event in which players could complete in in-game challenges during June 2-4 to raise funds. Millions of gamers... Read more...
The future of gaming is at 4K, or at least that is what the industry at large wants everyone to believe. There is a concerted effort to put the hardware in place, including 4K resolution televisions and upgraded consoles capable of pushing more pixels than ever before. Just look at Sony—the company is all about its PlayStation 4 Pro now, and it supposedly has plans to cut the price of its regular PlayStation 4 to $250 at E3.News of Sony's looming price cut comes from USA Today, a publication that is considerably more reliable than some random obscure website or blog where many rumors seem to originate....   The PlayStation 4 (PS4) first launched globally in November 2013, and has gone on to become a smash hit. Sony recently revealed that it has shipped over 60 million units of the consoles since launch, and it has outsold its rival Xbox One — which launched around the same time — nearly 2:1 to date. Although Sony’s console got a sort of “mid-cycle refresh” last year with the introduction of the PlayStation 4 Pro (PS4 Pro), it looks as though we could see a true next-generation console from the company as soon as next year. That information comes from Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian... Read more...
Given that the PlayStation 4 Pro gets the bulk of the attention when talking about Sony’s current generation consoles, it is easy to forget that the company also introduced a redesigned PlayStation 4 Slim around the same time. The PlayStation 4 Slim debuted last September at the $299 price point.Sony today is sweetening the deal a bit by doubling the amount of storage onboard the PlayStation 4 Slim from 500GB to 1TB. All other features remain identical to the 500GB PlayStation 4 Slim SKU, including its revised DualShock 4 wireless controller. The console should be available from all the... Read more...
Sony has made a rather big announcement for its PlayStation Now game streaming service. The streaming game catalog is being expanded to include PlayStation 4 games, while retaining its $19.99 per month cost. This capability will be extended to both the PlayStation 4 and Windows PCs. Gamers can currently stream PlayStation 3 games to both PlayStation 4 consoles and PCs, but this new functionality opens PlayStation Now up to more current titles. Unfortunately, there is no indication of which PlayStation 4 games will be included with PlayStation Now, but we wouldn’t count on the most recent releases... Read more...
There was a time back during the closing months of 2016 when we thought that Microsoft had turned the tide with Xbox One sales. A rather extensive round of price cuts along with the release of the Xbox One S allowed Microsoft to beat the PlayStation 4 in console sales for four straight months. However, Sony got its groove back in November (helped by the PlayStation 4 Pro launch) and hasn’t looked back since. According to NDP Group, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro have taken the sales crown again in February, extending its unbroken winning streak to four months. It shouldn’t be too surprising... Microsoft can celebrate a strong start to 2017 in terms of console sales. The company said it sold more Xbox One consoles in the United States in January of this year than any previous January, of which there have been three others since the Xbox One debuted in November of 2013. That is a pretty remarkable feat considering the age of the console and the fact that Microsoft previously revealed plans to release a more powerful console (Project Scorpio) at the end of this year. Even with that knowledge, consumers came out and purchase Xbox One and Xbox One S consoles in record number to start the... Read more...
