For months on end, the Xbox 360 outsold every other major game console on store shelves. But then, the next-generation war began, pitting the Xbox One against the PlayStation 4 and the WiiU. My, how the tables have turned. The NPD Group's latest research report shows that in January 2014, the PS4 outsold the Xbox One, and by a health 2-to-1 margin. A Sony spokesperson stated that demand has remained "incredibly strong" for the PS4 console, even after the holidays, making it the number one next-gen console to kick off 2014. Not surprisingly, he was quite proud to "nearly double" the sales of the... Read more...
Human adaptability is a hell of a thing, and one needs to look no further than quadriplegics who refuse to miss out. There are many quadriplegic gamers out there, and thanks to the work of Ken Yankelevitz, they’ve been able to enjoy a great deal of gaming for decades with his specially-designed joysticks. However, Yankelevitz has been unable to continue his work due to age and health issues of his own, but the mantle has been picked up by Fred Davison, who is raising Kickstarter funds to develop the next generation of adaptive game controllers. His case is compelling. “Video games today... Read more...
Calling all PlayStation 3 owners, if you're wiling to "ditch" your PS3, Microsoft will give you $100 of store credit for it at the Microsoft Store, which you can then apply towards the purchase of an Xbox One console. The promotion effectively eliminates the price difference between a PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One and could help tilt gamers who are on the fence in Microsoft's favor. Microsoft's trade-in offer is available at select Microsoft Stores in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico) and Canada; it's not valid online. In addition to accepting PS3 consoles, Microsoft's promotion also includes... Read more...
News from gaming insider Pete Doss is that Microsoft is mulling significant changes to the restrictions it places on developers regarding the Xbox One's GPU. Reportedly, some 10% of total GPU horsepower is reserved for the Kinect -- 8% for video and 2% for voice processing. Microsoft is apparently planning changes that would free up that 8% video entirely, leaving just 2% of the system's GPU dedicated to voice input. If Microsoft makes this change, it could have a significant uplift on system frame rates -- and it's not clear that developers would necessarily need to patch the architecture to take... Read more...
Ever since Sony cut a major deal for the Gaikai cloud gaming service, pundits have watched to see how the company would integrate the technology into the PlayStation product line. At CES this week, Sony finally took the wraps off that announcement and the initial program looks amazing. The upcoming PlayStation Now service will stream games from central servers to the PS4, PS Vita, PS3, TVs, tablets, and smartphones. Sony says PSNow will be supported on "most" of its upcoming 2014 Bravia televisions, but hasn't announced any additional partnerships with specific hardware vendors. The company claims... Here's a PSA to PlayStation 3 parents -- keep your gamer children hydrated and fed, and force them to get a bit of exercise and sleep every once in awhile. This will be super important advice come December 18 (this Wednesday) because that's when the highly addictive indie building game known as Minecraft will land on the PS3. Owen Hill from Mojang made the announcement on Sony's PlayStation Europe blog, adding that over 30 million copies of Minecraft have been sold to date. Expect that number to skyrocket once the PS3 Edition arrives, followed by Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition and Minecraft:... Read more...
There's a rumor going around on social media that you can enable Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on an Xbox One by hopping through a series of steps meant to enable Developer Mode, changing a setting, and restarting the box. Don't believe it. There is no method of allowing the Xbox One to play Xbox 360 games, via any software program. Microsoft's Major Nelson has denounced the idea directly. This is an opportunity to talk a bit about why you can't play Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One, and how we know the entire program is a hoax. The Backwards Compatibility Conundrum... Bungie's Destiny is a new FPS/RPG hybrid set in the distant future, in the aftermath of an apocalyptic series of events that reshaped human civilization and destroyed an empire that spanned the solar system. The company has kept much of its development under wraps, sketching out tidbits of information on the various character classes and enemies, but generally keeping everything close to the chest. Now, the company has released new gameplay footage -- and declared that PS4 and PS3 owners will be the first to beta test the title. Bungie has previously said that Destiny will be a living world, meaning... Read more...
With just over a week to go before Sony officially joins the next generation console wars, the hardware company announced that it has sold 80 million PlayStation 3 systems, while making sure to point out that it took 7 years to do it. That's a bit of a jab at Microsoft, which recently announced reaching the 80 million units sold milestone for its Xbox 360, though Microsoft's console debuted a year earlier than the PS3. Sony isn't likely to catch up to the Xbox 360 in console sales before the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One come out, but it's been such a close race, you might as well call it a tie. Meanwhile,... Sony's PlayStation 4 is so close that most gamers can almost taste it, but if the PS2's lifecycle is any indication of how the PS3 will be treated even after it's not the top dog, we're guessing it'll be around for a very long while. The PlayStation 3 is no slouch, even today, and it's one incredible media machine. Besides gaming, the PS3 has always marketed itself as a "do everything" set-top box, and a couple of new applications are being ported over to further prove that it's not kidding about that stance. TuneIn Radio has quickly become a go-to radio app for mobile users, and now it's coming... Read more...
This is one of those announcements that's so odd, I'm still trying to figure out if it works out to a positive. I'm fairly certain it does. So as you likely know, the Xbox One has both HDMI-in and HDMI-out capability. The point of HDMI-in is to allow you to hook up a cable box, with output then running from the Xbox One to your television. As it turns out, however, that's not the only thing the Xbox One can do. Since the HDMI-in port is a standard option, it can accept video input from a PS4 -- which means it can also accept a video stream from a PC. According to Xbox senior director of product... Crime might not pay -- but video games about crime certainly do, particularly when they're the follow-up to one of the biggest franchises in gaming. Grand Theft Auto V -- easily one of the biggest titles left for the Xbox 360 and PS3 -- went on sale today and cleared $800M in revenue in just 24 hours. That's not just a record for Grand Theft Auto, it's a record for Take Two, and possibly for the entire gaming industry. Last year, Activision touted Call of Duty Black Ops II as raking in a record $500M in revenue, but this has blown way past that. Reviews of the game are excellent, with an average... Read more...
It's common knowledge that game console and game sales have been in a serious slump this year. According to conventional wisdom, this is part of the console refresh cycle -- sales of older hardware falls off as customers await new products, even when manufacturers are publicly committed to long life cycles for current generation hardware. Makes sense, right? Right. But a new comparison between long-term hardware sales for Sony and Nintendo products makes it clear that the recent decline in shipments isn't a new development -- it's been building for a long time. Take a look at Sony and Nintendo's... Read more...
Sony's PlayStation 4 is scheduled to land in the United States on 11/15 for $399. But, believe it or not, there's still a big market out there for the PlayStation 3, and Sony realizes it still has a few months to milk its existing console before the new one comes to town. That's the only logical reason we can muster for the emergence of this Azurite Blue PS3 console, which will land on October 8, 2013 as a GameStop exclusive. It'll ship only in a 250GB (HDD) model, and will only be available for sale at U.S. and Canada GameStop / EB Games locations. The bundle includes a blue console, a blue DualShock... Read more...
