There's no disputing that Bill Gates is blessed with a brilliant mind. Sure, he dropped out of Harvard College, but he got accepted into the elite institution of higher learning in the first place. Leading into his college career, Gates scored 1,590 out of 1,600 on the SAT. The rest is history -- he went on to co-found Microsoft, built a net worth that's in the billions ($76.8 billion at last count), and now spends his time on his philanthropic efforts. In fact, one of the few things you won't find on his resume is that of being a chess champion, and having now been soundly beaten by one on television,... Read more...
Since Steve Ballmer is stepping down from his role as Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, the Redmond software giant is getting a bit of a fresh start, and depending on who takes his place, the company will get a fresh new perspective, as well. However, some feel that Ballmer's departure isn't enough; they want co-founder Bill Gates to step away, too. Citing "people familiar with the matter," Reuters is reporting that three of the top 20 shareholders in Microsoft are collectively urging the board to encourage Gates to step down as chairman. Those three shareholders represent a 5 percent stake... Read more...
You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who would suggest that Bill Gates isn't a pretty intelligent guy. But, he's also Microsoft at his core, and that company doesn't exactly "get along" with the likes of Samsung, Apple, and Google. Lately, Gates has taken a particularly harsh tone in regard to Google's Project Loon -- a wild initiative that puts Internet distribution up in the clouds. The goal was to provide Internet to rural and under-served areas via floating balloons, but Gates is suggesting that it simply will not help the poor. According to Gates: "When you're dying of malaria... I'm not sure... Read more...
How the time flies. I remember a time when Bill Gates' fortunate was valued at a mere $40 billion. It seemed like no one could touch him, until a certain business magnate Carlos Slim came along and surpassed him in 2007. Since then, the fortunes of both men have continued to increase, and this week, Bloomberg's Billionaires Index has put Mr. Gates in the lead once again, with a fortune of $72.7 billion. Mr. Slim settles in at $72.1 billion. It may be easy to assume that the majority of Mr. Gates' wealth stemmed from Microsoft, but that's not the case. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft is responsible... Read more...
Bill Gates as long since removed himself from the day-to-day workings of Microsoft, but that’s not to say he won’t pinch hit for the software giant from time to time. In an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” this week (in which he sat alongside Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO Warren Buffett), Gates took a swipe at Apple’s market-dominating iPad.  Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 with Windows 8 “Microsoft is trying to gain share in what has been dominated by the iPad-type device,” said Gates. “But a lot of those users are frustrated. They can’t... Read more...
As we reported on earlier, geek super hero Bill Gates took to Reddit's AMA section to tackle as many questions from users as possible in the span of just a single hour. In the end, he did quite well, answering a total of 35 questions tackling a wide-range of different subjects. One question that just has to be asked during any Bill Gates interview has got to be "What type of computer are you using right now?". After all, wouldn't we all love to know if he just so happened to be using a Mac at the time? Alas, that wasn't the case this time, but I am not sure anyone would have guessed appropriately.... Billionaire, Genius, Playboy, Philanthropist - these are terms you may have heard in reference to the fictional Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. In reality however, super heroes these days come from all walks of life, including Super Geek Heroes like Bill Gates. There's little question, few people have done more to shape the face of the modern computing than Mr. Gates. In his earlier days, the man was either revered, feared or loathed (competitively) for his business prowess, creativity and analytical foresight.  These days, the Bill Gates is a shining example of what it means to give back to your... “Surface is an unbelievably great product,” says Bill Gates in an interview with Microsoft’s Steve Clayton. It’s not surprising that the former Microsoft CEO is excited about the Surface and other upcoming Windows products, but he has more than enthusiasm to share. Gates goes into some detail about his own experiences with the products. Gates explains why he thinks touch is important and gets a plug in for speech input, as well, but he focuses on the importance of Windows 8 being available wherever you go. You won’t hear anything earth-shattering, but it’s... Read more...
Not every superstar has a great singing voice, so Simon Cowell and Will.i.am are starting a project that will highlight heroes who are more at home in a lab or a garage than on stage. So says Will.i.am, who described the new TV show as a place where young people can express themselves and cited mathematics and sciences as ways people might show their talents. Given that Will.iAm referred to the project as “X Factor for tech,” it seems likely that the new show’s science and mathematics whizzes will be putting their talents in front of a judge or judges. Details about the show are... Read more...
The tech world just isn't the same without Bill Gates being actively involved like he was pre-retirement, but the Microsoft founder still makes time, on occasion, to chat about today's technology trends, even if just in passing. Such was the case when Gates sat down for a conversation with The Chronicle on the topic of higher education. Naturally, the philanthropist had plenty to say on the matter, but he also revealed his thoughts on Microsoft's strategy with the Surface tablet. Gates was asked how he feels about the idea of giving devices, like tablets, to students and hoping for change, as well... Read more...
The Forbes Rich List for 2011 is out, and not only has Carlos Slim retained his title as the world's richest person, he's extended his lead of his closest rivals. Once again in second place is former Microsoft CEO BIll Gates, and Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway is in third. Carlos Slim easily holds the Forbes Rich List #1 slot with a personal value of $74 billion, which means he gained more than $20B year-over-year. Meanwhile, Gates and Buffett "only" have a meaguer $56B and $50B respectively. nterestingly, thanks to a well-publicized influx of cash into Facebook by Goldman Sachs, there are... Read more...
Don't worry, Bill Gates hasn't lost his mind, and starting Tweeting like a bird. Rather, the tech guru has joined the ranks of Twitter. And while Twitter's fail whales were out in force this morning, it was most likely not because Bill Gates joined Twitter, despite the fact that Gates already has over 230,000 followers at the time of this writing.Instead, although Twitter readily admitted it had issues this morning, it was either due to: a) hardware failure or b) the magnitude 6.1 aftershock that hit Haiti this morning. The outage occurred soon after the temblor hit. Gates, on the other hand, tweeted... Read more...
Is there such a thing as being too popular? Having too many friends? If you're Bill Gates, we guess the answer is "yes." The famed Microsoft co-founder has recently admitted to giving up Facebook after "too many" people wanted to befriend him. Of course, we find it kind of silly that Mr. Gates expected anything other than an onslaught of friend requests, but we digress. The face of Microsoft recently told an audience in India that he gave Facebook a shot but ended up throwing his hands in the air after "10,000 people" attempted to become one of his online friends. The issue? He had trouble figuring... Read more...
