The rumors have started in earnest about the next flagship smartphone from Samsung, which is expected to be called the Galaxy S9. Like Galaxy devices that came before it, the S9 is expected to come in a standard and plus sizes. A results page from Geekbench has surfaced that claims to show the results for the Galaxy S9 Plus version of the smartphone. The results page (seen below) calls out a score of 1191 for single-core and 3835 for multi-core. The model number is Samsung SM-G965F and the listing calls out a motherboard dubbed universal9810. That is presumed to be the new Exynos 9810 SoC... Read more...
Alleged CAD drawings of the Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphone have leaked online and the smartphone looks very much like the existing Galaxy S8. We see the same curved edges on the screen out front but with thinner bezels. The back does show a revised layout for the camera and fingerprint scanner. On the current Galaxy S8 models, the camera is a single-lens unit and the fingerprint scanner is directly to the right of the camera -- a position that many don't care for at all. The S9 drawings, which are originally sourced from Weibo, show a dual camera layout on the back with those cameras stacked in the... Read more...
T-Mobile has rolled out a new smartphone that won't have fanboys clamoring over specs and performance, but it looks to be a solid device for budget conscious users. The smartphone is called the REVVL Plus and it has a 6-inch full HD screen and dual rear-facing cameras with one being a 13MP unit and the other a 5MP. The front camera is an 8MP unit for selfies. Power comes from a 3,380 mAh internal battery promising up to 12 hours talk time and 16.5 days standby. The REVVL Plus comes in black with magenta accents only; which will likely play favorably to only diehard T-Mobile fans. The OS is Android... Read more...
Google has been battling a number of issues relating to the LG-produced OLED display used on its new Pixel 2 XL Android Oreo flagship. While Google said that the burn-in issue is normal with an OLED and phones using similar screen tech have the same potential issue, it can't say that about some of the other issues that the smartphone must live with. The latest issue for some Pixel 2 XL owners has to do with screen edges that are unresponsive. Google has admitted the issue exists and has said it will sort it out in a future OTA update. The catch is that means at least for now if your Pixel 2 XL... Read more...
If you're one of the lucky relative few who have Android 8.0 'Oreo' on their device, there are a couple of reasons to be pleased about its first major update, appropriately versioned 8.1. That's especially true if you happen to be using a device lacking storage, or simply hate battery-draining apps (and who doesn't?). Storage space comes at a premium in smartphones, but if you're using a high-end device, chances are you're not feeling the same kind of pain that those using lower-end phones are. In today's landscape, even 8GB is a paltry amount of storage - the kind that prevents people from taking... Read more...
The coming OnePlus 5T smartphone has graced us with another leak, and this time some of the specs have turned up thanks to a listing on GFXBench. The specifications according to the benchmark will include a 6-inch FHD+ display packing 2160x1080 pixels. That means an aspect ratio of 18:9, which is like the LG V30 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones. Other specs rumored for the smartphones include a 20MP front camera and dual cameras on the back each offering 16MP. That rear cameras also tipped for tech that allows portrait mode and bokeh effects. Interestingly rumors also suggest that the front selfie camera... Read more...
Paying $699.99 for the Essential Phone? Ain't nobody got time for that. If you shelled out the full asking price of the smartphone on pre-order or early at launch, the bad news for you today is that the price of the smartphone has gone down again, with Best Buy chopping anther $50 off the asking price for the phone as it tries to move stock. With the additional $50 off, the smartphone is now selling for $449.99. The father of Android, Andy Rubin, and his company, Essential, certainly didn’t expect to be here with the fancy new device. The smartphone launched as a Sprint carrier exclusive, which... Read more...
Yesterday HTC unveiled a slick new flagship smartphone called the U11 Plus that it has curiously not decided to sell in the U.S. The official reasoning for that device to skip the States was because HTC didn’t want to offend recent U11 buyers. An interesting new report has turned up that will make you wonder if the U11 Plus isn't being offered in the U.S. for another reason. If you looked at the U11 Plus and thought that the specs sounded a lot like the Pixel 2 XL (check out our review), there is a good reason for that according to one report. It seems that Google was going back and forth on which... Read more...

If there's a sleeper phone that's been on our radar for a while here, it's the LG V30. LG has been teasing this phone for what seems like an eternity. We actually got our first hands-on time with it a couple of months ago in August. However, LG has been conservative with its last couple of handset roll-outs, taking the same preview tease approach with the LG G6, where we got an early look prototype unit and firm rules of engagement with it before final production units arrived. The G6 was one of the first generation thin bezel phones on the market at the time and LG wanted to make doubly sure it... Read more...
Google's response to its investigation into reported screen burn in issues with the Pixel 2 XL most certainly won't make owners happy. If you were expecting a fix for the issue, sadly one may not be coming. Google has published an update on the Pixel 2 XL to its product forums and has basically said the burn-in issue is normal. Google says that burn-in (differential aging in Google parlance) of the Pixel 2 XL is similar to what happens on OLED panels used in comparable products. In other words, Google is saying every OLED panel does this and that what people are seeing with burn in is normal for... Read more...
In an effort to boost security on Android devices, Google is testing a feature called DNS (Domain Name Server) over TLS (Transport Layer Security) to protect users from hackers who might be spying on a site's traffic, according to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This experimental feature is currently fielding comments at the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). an Internet standards group. The DNS over TLS protocol encrypts DNS inquiries to same level as HTTPS, effectively blocking cyber snoops from logging or otherwise seeing the websites that users visit. HTTPS alone does not offer... Read more...
One of the potential downsides to the OLED screens that are making their way into high-end smartphones is screen burn-in. This is something that happens when you have the same items on the screen for extended periods of time, like navigation buttons. Essentially, you end up with ghost images left behind on the screen. Normally this is something that happens over an extended period of time, but there are reports of burn-in happening on Pixel 2 XL smartphones only days after purchase.  Google has announced that it is looking into these problems for owners of the smartphone. The tweet embedded... Read more...
With Samsung's Galaxy S8 (and S8+) having been on the market for a staggering six months now, it's time to look to the future. In other words: a time when Samsung unveils its Galaxy S9, a phone that's already being hyped to great levels despite the fact that it won't be out for months. In fact, the most tangible evidence we have right now of the S9 (and S9+) is the logo (seen later in the post). Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+ Most (or perhaps all) of the information that's come out about the Galaxy S9 has been leaked by respected leaker Benjamin Geskin. He says that the Galaxy S9 will ship with Qualcomm's... Read more...
