We've hit a turning point in technology, one in which the old ways are, well, old and outdated. Traditional desktops still exist, sure, but bulky towers are fading right before our eyes just like that scene in Back to the Future where the people in Marty's photograph slowly disappear. In place of medium and large-size rectangular boxes are space-saving form factors like Intel's Next Unit of Computing (NUC) and, to a lesser extreme, sleek looking all-in-one (AIO) designs that are winning favor among consumers. At the same time this is happening, increasingly powerful mobile devices are flooding... Read more...
In case you haven't noticed, the line is becoming increasingly blurred between varying types of PCs that used to have a single purpose. Not anymore. Following the introduction of Windows 8, we've seen several hybrid convertibles, including some funky designs, and that flexible approach to computing is being extended wherever OEMs feel there's a market. For HP, that means releasing an all-in-one (AIO) desktop that is anything but stationary. HP's new ENVY Rove 20 is being billed as a mobile AIO -- the company's first, in fact -- that's no longer tied to the desk. It goes from being upright to completely... Read more...
Believe it or not, MSI's AE1941 all-in-one (AIO) PC has less fans than Vanilla Ice at a bluegrass festival to benefit modern musicians and singers. That's to say it's entirely fanless, a design that MSI claims is an industry first in the AIO category, and we'd be weary of that decision if not for the inclusion of an Intel Celeron 874 processor, an Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) chip that shouldn't produce a ton of heat. It also has 4GB of DDR3-1333 memory, which is as much as the single DIMM slot can handle; 320GB hard drive; Intel HD Graphics; 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi; DVD burner; 3-in-1 memory card reader;... The all-in-one PC form factor is a brilliant, if not obvious, evolution of the desktop computer. AIO systems offer the maximum amount of screen real estate while drastically minimizing the total footprint of the computer by packing all the components inside the monitor (or in the case of this particular AIO, the base of the stand). Even better, now that ten-finger touch input is de rigeur, these machines offer new methods of computer interaction that are alternately ideal for wide-eyed youngsters, old luddites, and seasoned power users. (Give a toddler a touchscreen and she’ll figure out... Read more...

Microsoft likes to point out that Windows 8 represents a re-imagining of the Windows platform, and going along with that theme, Redmond's OEM partners are stepping outside the bounds of what constitutes a typical PC. A good example of this is Lenovo's IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC, or the world's first interpersonal PC, as Lenovo describes it. Based on the same concept as a convertible notebook, the Horizon can lay flat on any surface, but it's far too large to call a tablet. The 27-inch display allows for two or more people to use the screen at the same time and is ideally suited for touchscreen... Read more...
CyberPowerPC is a boutique PC builder known for, among other things, its Zeus line of custom gaming rigs, and the company is lending the brand name to a new series of all-in-one desktops, as well. The Zeus Touch series is now available and includes the Zeus Touch 1000, 2000, and 3000. The AIOs were made with a “minimalist tablet-like design” in mind, and all of them feature a 21.5-inch (1920x1080), ten-point touch LED display and Windows 8. They run 3rd-generation Intel processors (any of the three models can be configured with up to an Intel Core i7-3770S), H77 Express motherboards,... Read more...

MSI announced the new 27-inch AE2712 and AE2712G All-in-One PCs. Featuring a 27-inch HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, the new AE2712 and AE2712G AIOs support up to 10 multi-touch points and feature a frameless design. Thanks to its touch display, the new Wind Top AE2712 and AE2712G AIOs are ideal for use with Windows 8, which comes preloaded on the machines. The frameless design also works well with touch, enabling users to slide freely on the surface and corners without interference. As another benefit of the frameless design, dust doesn't get caught in the nooks and edges of the display. ... Read more...

In preparation for Windows 8's coming out party, Samsung today announced at IFA 2012 its new Series 7 and Series 5 AIO desktop lines. "Our new Series 7 and Series 5 All-In-One PCs are designed to meet a range of consumer needs across the home, all within highly stylized form factors that users will be proud to put on display," said Todd Bouman, vice president of product marketing... When it comes to all-in-one PCs, looks are as important as the tech. You can get by with a clunky system in your office, but AIOs are often in kitchens, living rooms, and other spots where visitors are going to see them. Maingear’s Solo series was pretty slick as AIOs go, but there’s no question that the redesign puts it on a new level aesthetically. Maingear announced the overhaul today and pointed to the Solo 21's clean looks, new tech, and upgradability as major draws. Where once the Solo had three feet, it now has a single, chrome stand that sports a cut-out of the Maingear logo.... Read more...
