Attention all Age of Empires fans, we have some fantastic news. Age of Empires 4 is in development for Windows 10 PCs. The announcement was made yesterday that the game is being developed by Microsoft Studios with Relic Entertainment in charge of the project. The franchise has been without a new title since 2005 when Age of Empires 3 launched; the first entry in the franchise was all the way back in 1997. Microsoft is planning to follow the money trail into mobile, albeit through a licensing play. KLab, a maker of smartphone games based in Japan, is building a free-to-play version of Age of Empires for Windows Phone, Android, and iOS devices. It's called Age of Empires: World Domination and it will feature "simple and intuitive touch controls" as you lead troops into a battle system that's been re-imagined for mobile. According to a now-pulled update pushed to Age of Empires Online, Microsoft's Games for Windows Live will shut down altogether by July 1, 2014. That unofficial announcement follows official word that the Games for Windows Live marketplace would close on August 22 without a replacement service being offered. MS has refused to comment on whether the July 1, 2014 date is legitimate, but it raises real questions of what's going to happen to the games that require GFWL to authenticate and save data.
