After much speculation and a slew of rumors surrounding the update to Windows 8, Microsoft's Tami Reller told Reuters that it’s official: the update, which had been codenamed “Windows Blue”, will be called “Windows 8.1”. Windows 8.1 is coming later this year, with a preview coming at Microsoft’s BUILD conference in late June, and it will be available as a free update to Windows 8 and Windows RT via the app store. Windows 8 has suffered through a fairly lackluster debut, with plenty of critics voicing their opinions, and even for those who do like the new OS,... Read more...
Thank goodness. According to the Verge’s “sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans”, the upcoming update/upgrade to Windows 8, Window 8.1 (or “Windows Blue”, as it had been previously known), will bring with it the Start button. Although some of us are perfectly happy with the new Windows 8, others--well, most--of us are still trying to convince ourselves not to hate it. Many feel that although Microsoft built Windows 8 to take advantage of touchscreens while maintaining all the powerful and familiar features of the conventional desktop, the company ended up with... A couple of days ago we called Windows Blue the worst-kept secret in tech; Microsoft apparently understands that, as an executive’s blog post today revealed that Windows Blue is a Real Thing so casually and with so little context that he probably assumes everyone knows what he’s talking about. Shaw (pictured) indeed said in a lengthy “state of the company”-type blog post that Windows Blue exists. “With a remarkable foundation of products in market and a clear view of how... Read more...
More details have emerged surrounding Windows Blue, the worst-kept secret in tech. Windows9Beta leaked word of a Windows Blue build that was available “somewhere on the Internet”, and apparently at least one WinForum.eu forum user found it, installed it, and let loose a barrage of screenshots. Assuming this is all completely legitimate, the most obvious change pertains to the Metro UI, including greater flexibility in sizing Live Tiles and customizing the Start screen, particularly as the Personalize setting (among others, including Devices and Share) is now under the Settings charm.... By now it’s all but certain that Windows Blue is coming, and that it’s probably coming sometime this year. Blue is expected to be a Windows 8 “refresh”, as opposed to an entirely new OS (although work on Windows 9 is certainly underway), and more details continue to leak out about it. The latest is a video from Microsoft’s TechFest event showing a demo of the Fresh Paint app with more than one reference to Blue. MSFTKitchen tracked the video down--apparently it was publicly available for anyone who knew where to look--and posted it on YouTube. (A funny moment in the... Read more...
