It's been several months since news of the PS3's core vulnerabilities hit the news, but the case remains stuck in judicial limbo. Sony wants to move the case to California on the grounds that Hotz accessed the PlayStation Network (PSN), which is physically located in that state. Hotz's lawyers have counter-claimed that since Hotz is not a resident of California and is a person, rather than a corporation, the suit should be prosecuted in New Jersey where Hotz himself lives. Sony currently claims to have evidence that George Hotz and one "blickmaniac" are the same person, based on the fact that one... Read more...
Do you own a PlayStation 3 console? If so, shut up, sit down, and do what you're told! Before you fire off an angry email, understand that directive's not coming from us -- we're just the messenger here, so please don't shoot -- but Sony, who admittedly didn't word things that way. What the company did do, however, was threaten PS3 hackers with a lifetime ban. "Violation of the System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers... Read more...
If you're someone who follows the media streaming business with any regularity, you'll probably recognize the Orb Networks name. This month, Orb is expanding in a big way, and coming into mainstream homes via the PlayStation 3 and a host of other Blu-ray players. The new Orb BR application is designed to integrate with Sony's PS3 and select Blu-ray players, enabling people to watch shows from Hulu, Hulu Plus, Comedy Central and many other portals. The app brings this content right to your television, and would make the most sense to use on players that aren't already Internet-connected with built-in... Read more...
There's hardly anything better than "free." But "free access for all" might just sound even better, especially if you're a PlayStation 3 who has been waiting for Hulu Plus access. Up until now, having access to Hulu Plus on your PS3 required an invite, so you had to be a member of PlayStation Plus. Members of the free PlayStation Network were left out in the cold. But no more. Hulu has announced that they are moving on a plan to extend content options and get Hulu Plus onto more devices. Starting next week, PSN users will no longer need an invite to download Hulu Plus, but to use the service, they... Read more...
With plenty of time to spare for the upcoming holiday shopping season, Sony said it has gone and answered the cries of its gamers who apparently wanted nothing more than to be able to buy a 320GB PlayStation console in standalone form. Now you can, so long as you have the requisite funds ($350). "The digital distribution trend is undeniably gaining momentum, and we here at PlayStation are committed to providing you with the hardware you need to support as much downloadable media as possible," Sony stated in a blog post. "The 320GB PS3 system, which will retail for $349.99, has the largest storage... Read more...
Not all of the early reviews of Sony's PlayStation Move motion sensing controllers have been glowing, but that hasn't stopped gamers from flocking to the new hardware. According to Sony, more than a million Move devices in North and Latin America have sold in the first 30 days since launch . "Retail demand is incredibly strong and we're working hard to keep the product in stock" said SCEA chief executive Jack Tretton. "We believe we are on target to meet our end of year goals and expect sales to increase as our publishers and developers continue to update popular titles and introduce new games."... Read more...
Today is the big day! You're probably wondering what big day we could be talking about, but if you're a PlayStation 3 owner, you probably understand. The PlayStation Move accessory, which was arguably designed to take on Nintendo's Wii remote and Microsoft's Kinect motion sensing system, has launched in North America. Sony claims that sales will officially begin on September 19, but many outlets including Amazon are already listing the product as in stock and ready for shipment. PS Move is a new motion handheld that acts almost like the Wii Remote, but users incorporate it with the PS Eye camera... Read more...
Never has there been a better time to be a console junkie. That's because your gaming dollar stretches a lot farther today than it did when the current crop of the 'big 3' gaming consoles were first released (Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3), with new models boasting bigger feature-sets, and in some cases, lower prices. The upgrade bug has apparently hit Sony, who is now shipping a 160GB version of its PS3 console for $300, the same price as the current 120GB model. But the real treat for console gamers will come next month when Sony releases its PlayStation Move bundle. This... Read more...
Do you enjoy using Netflix on your PlayStation 3? It's a great service, and it's a great addition to an already powerful and flexible console. But one thing annoys us: it requires a specific Netflix disc in order to work. If you misplace your disc or head over to a friend's home without it, your PS3 simply cannot access Netflix. And considering that the Xbox 360 can access Netflix without any kind of special disc, this makes it that much harder to swallow. But according to Netflix's CEO Reed Hastings, PS3 owners won't have to deal with this frustration for too much longer. In the company's most... Read more...
Colored game consoles have been around for years now. It didn't take long for companies to realize that consumers would go crazy over a simple "limited run" of colored consoles, and even as far back as the famed black DreamCast, this tactic has shown to work well. For whatever reason, consumers love color choices. Maybe it fits their mood or their style, or maybe it just helps to fit in with their decorations. Either way, Sony has never been one to shy away from colors, and even today there are quite a few PSP color options around the world. The company's past PlayStation 2 console has also shipped... Will it be Sony to usher in the pay-for generation of Hulu? It's not the most positive designation in the world to have, but given Sony's expertise in the media realm, and just how elegant their own multi-media store solution is on the PlayStation 3, we wouldn't really mind it. The PS3 has been a multi-media monster from Day 1, being the only game console to support Blu-ray, and now having the ability to stream content from nearly anywhere thanks to the PlayOn application and Netflix streaming support. So Hulu seems like a natural next step. We have been hearing rumors for months on end that Hulu... Read more...
One thing that has separated Xbox 360 and PS3/Wii when it comes to online gaming is price. Microsoft has always charged users for Xbox LIVE Gold, a yearly service to get onto their servers and battle the world, download media, network, etc. Sony and Nintendo have made their services available for free, presumably bundled into the cost of the hardware and software. But at E3, Sony finally caved. Now, the PlayStation Network will have two faces: a free one, and a premium one. And if you plan on getting in on any of the good stuff, you'll soon have to pay up in order to do so. We can't say that this... Read more...
So, let's see. Nintendo revealed a 3D version of their DS gaming handheld (the 3DS), and Microsoft revealed both the Kinect motion sensing system and a brand new Xbox 360 design this week at E3. And all Sony debuted was a new sound system? Hardly. The PlayStation Move was also out in full effect, and while that name has been around for a few months now, Sony has yet to actually make a public debut of the new motion controller. At E3, the company announced that Move would shp in Europe and Asia on September 15, with North America getting it on September 19. Pricing is set at $49.99 in the U.S.,... Read more...
In the gaming world, most consumers remain fixated on one single thing: graphics. Ever since the Wii was introduced, another point has been focused on: control. But one area that gets very little attention, even today, is audio. Sony has always seemed to care more about audio than the other guys when it comes to gaming, and at E3 this week the company announced that they will be releasing a "subwoofer built-in, all-in-one Surround Sound System for the PlayStation 3." Basically, this is a soundbar setup made specifically for your PS3 console, and it's a way to add "surround sound" to your console... Read more...
