For Netflix users, there's hardly a better way to stream content than on Microsoft's Xbox 360. The user interface is fluid, and the console itself is plenty powerful to churn through the HD streams. But Sony's PlayStation 3 offers a similarly excellent experience -- one that's getting better as of today. Netflix admits that the PS3 is one of the "most popular ways" that its users consume TV and movies. With the new Player for PS3 update, you'll notice an updated design that is more consistent with the Netflix player on the Web as well as the company's mobile and tablet applications. The key feature... Read more...
Were you aware that game consoles are banned in China? Due to fears that these devices could harm the physical and mental development of children, seven Chinese ministries decided to ban the manufacture, sale, and import of game consoles a little over a decade ago. Now authorities in Beijing are starting to rethink things. Citing an anonymous government source, China Daily reports that China is warming to the idea of lifting the ban on game consoles, which would open up a potentially massive market for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo to tap into. "We are reviewing the policy and have conducted some... Read more...
Prince Harry of Wales is a pretty good shooter, both in real-life and when playing video games. In fact, he credits his time playing games on an Xbox and PlayStation with making him a better shooter, and maybe even a better pilot. The 28-year-old spoke candidly about his tour of duty, flying Apache helicopters, and even killing. When asked if he had ever killed anyone from the cockpit of his aircraft, he was very straightforward in his response. "Yeah, so lots of people have. The squadron's been out here. Everyone's fired a certain amount," Prince Harry said. He added, "Take a life to save a life."... Read more...
As of November 4, 2012 and just a few days after it turned six years old, the PlayStation 3 console reached a milestone of 70 million cumulative worldwide unit sales, Sony announced on Friday. In addition, sales of the PlayStation Move motion controller have now surpassed 15 million units around the globe. "The PS3 system has delivered high quality, award-winning entertainment experiences since its launch. Throughout its lifecycle, the PS3 system has continued to evolve with more streamlined design, larger hard disk drive (HDD) capacity, and new features through software updates," Sony said. "In... It's kind of a curious thing that Nintendo is the only console maker out of the big 3 to have announced a new generation model, the Wii U, which will be released in the fourth quarter of this year. Microsoft and Sony so far have preferred to keep their next-gen console plans close to their respective chests while they squeeze out a few more sales out of their existing hardware. For Sony, that may mean releasing yet another PlayStation 3 console. Sony has filed paperwork with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that reveals a 4000 series (PS3 CECH-4001x) model, which is believed to be a... Read more...
Do you enjoy the sound of your own voice? Don't worry, we're not here to judge, and truth be sold, we sometimes feel the same way. The exception to our vanity is when we're playing a game and yelling at our teammates through a headset. That became a problem when Sony rolled out its v4.10 for the PlayStation 3, which enabled you to hear your own voice through the company's new Wireless Stereo Headset, a feature many users complained about. Sony heard you loud and clear and is getting ready to roll out another firmware update, v4.20, which will give you the option to select one of five levels of... Read more...
If you grew up playing on an Atari 2600 or ColecoVision, your parents may have shrugged off your obsession with videogames as nothing more than a fad. They couldn't have been more wrong. Videogames are more popular than ever, as evidenced by more than half -- 56 percent, to be exact -- of U.S. households laying claim to at least one modern generation game console, according market research firm Nielsen. Not surprisingly, nearly two-thirds of consoles are located in the living room, which underscores that these devices are not just adept at playing games, but also serve double duty as media centers.... Microsoft's Xbox 360 console is six years old. The Nintendo Wii is five years old, and so is the Sony PlayStation 3. All three are due for an overhaul (can you imagine gaming on a PC that's half a decade old, or more?), and while they're still popular gaming platforms, consoles are really starting to shine as streaming media centers. According to market research firm Nielsen, streaming video on game consoles is up over last year. Xbox 360 owners now use their consoles to stream video 14 percent of the time, which is almost as much as PS3 users (15 percent). But it's the Wii that sees the most time... Read more...
Microsoft's Xbox 360 had another record month in November and remained the top selling console for the fourth consecutive month with 1.7 million unit sales in the U.S. alone, according to data released by market research firm NPD Group. That's a 23 percent year-over-year jump, but perhaps more importantly, Microsoft was able to move almost twice as many Xbox 360 consoles in the U.S. in November than Sony's PlayStation 3, which notched 900,000 sales. After that, the most popular consoles in the month of November all belonged to Nintendo, who sold 860,000 Wii consoles, 795,000 3DS handheld consoles,... Read more...
Someone needs to send Sony the book "How to Win Friends and Influence People" because the company clearly isn't getting it. We can point to the whole rootkit fiasco, but who needs to look back that far when Sony's shenanigans never seem to stop? Following that big mess with the security breach to its PlayStation Network (PSN), Sony is trying to force PS3 owners to waive their rights to join a class action lawsuit, even if such a request might not be enforceable. Here's what you'll find nestled in the latest mandatory system update: ANY DISPUTE RESOLUTION PROCEEDINGS, WHETHER IN ARBITRATION OR COURT,... Read more...
Sony has posted financial results for the first fiscal quarter 2012, and the company has been hurt by a decline in PS3 sales. Fiscal Q1 revenues from game hardware, software and online services dropped 11.9% from the previous year to $1.5 billion, while unit sales of the Playstation 3 dropped to 1.8 million compared to 2.4 million the year prior. The company expects the total number of PS3 units sold this year to be 15 million, which is actually an increase from 14.3 million last year. The Playstation 2 is still going, with 1.4 million sold in the quarter, only a little bit down from 1.6 million... Read more...
Nintendo just announced a next generation console -- the Wii U -- at the E3 Expo, Microsoft is rumored to be unveiling an Xbox 720 (or whatever the Xbox 360's successor will be called) at next year's E3 Expo, and Sony? Well, Sony is again rehashing its PlayStation 3 system, this time with a version that's lighter and a little easier on Mother Nature than previous versions. According to a new listing on Sony Japan's website, the new CECH-3000B PS3 Slim will weigh nearly a pound lighter than before at 5.7 pounds versus 6.6 pounds. It will also consume less energy at 200W versus 230W and come with... Read more...

Here we are going on week 4 of the well documented PlayStation Network outage, and as it turns out, some PSN gamers would rather throw in the towel than wait for Sony to restore its network. According to Edge Magazine, PlayStation 3 owners are trading in their consoles for cash or Xbox 360 consoles. In addition, sales of PSN points cards are down, and so are pre-orders for PS3 titles. "In the first week of downtime we did not really see any major change in sales or trades," a store manager at a major UK retailer speaking on condition of anonymity told Edge. “However from the second week onwards...
