Apple may look to the field of augmented reality to help set its upcoming iPhone 8 device apart from the competition. Perhaps just as importantly, infusing AR into the iPhone 8 would set its next flagship phone apart from previous iPhone models, a not unimportant goal after Apple faced criticism for the lack of innovation that went into designing the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. That is not to say the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are bad phones. Far from it—they're the best iPhones to date, and some would consider them the best smartphones available. But compared to previous models, Apple's latest... Read more...
Imagination Technologies introduced its next-generation PowerVR Furian architecture, which it says is an entirely new GPU architecture designed for the evolved graphics compute needs of next-generation consumer device. While not specifically stated, those future consumer devices could include Apple's forthcoming iPhone 8 handset, along with iterations that extend beyond the iPhone 8. It does not take a giant leap of faith to get there. Apple has a history of licensing GPU technology from Imagination Technologies, which the Cupertino outfit injects into its custom A-series system-on-chips (SoCs)... Read more...
The primary criticism surrounding the iPhone 7 is that Apple did not do enough to innovate—it feels more like an incremental update with faster hardware than a new generation handset. Apple disagrees with that notion, at least outwardly. Looking ahead, it's now rumored that Apple will use a flexible curved organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display on one of its iPhone 8 models. People supposedly familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal that Apple's been putting in research on flexible OLED panels similar to the ones that Samsung uses in its flagship Galaxy phones, and that it had... It looks as though Apple may have just confirmed one of the biggest rumors concerning the upcoming iPhone 8 flagship that will launch this fall. The company this week popped up as a member of the Wireless Power Consortium — the group behind the Qi wireless standard. More than 200 companies belong to the consortium, including some big names in the mobile industry like Samsung, LG, HTC, Qualcomm and Huawei. This confirmation comes just days after Mac Otakara suggested that the iPhone 8 design will return to a glass back (like the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s) and will support wireless power delivery. In... Diamonds are the traditional tenth anniversary gift, but Apple reportedly has a little something different up its sleeve. Apple is planning on releasing a tenth anniversary iPhone 8 with an OLED display and it will likely cost upward of $1,000 USD. The 5.7-inch iPhone 8 (or iPhone X) will likely look quite different than its predecessors. It is believed that the iPhone 8 will be composed of stainless steel, instead of pricier aluminum. The back of the iPhone 8 may also be made of glass instead of metal (like its iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s predecessors). Apple has been working to remove the physical... Read more...
Apple has received criticism for not injecting more innovation into its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus handsets, and the same will probably be true of the inevitable iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus variants. However, Apple will have an opportunity to shake things up when it releases its iPhone 8 and one of the things it might be considering is revising its Touch ID system to combine fingerprint recognition with facial recognition for enhanced security. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo states in a new research report that he expects Apple to go this route, though not only for security purposes. Revising... Read more...
If the 4-inch iPhone SE and 4.7-inch iPhone 7 are too small, and the hulking 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus is too big, Apple just might have a “tweener” phone to satisfy your smartphone needs in the future. Frequent Apple leaker Macotakara reports that a 5-inch iPhone 7s will launch during the fall of 2017 alongside the highly anticipated iPhone 8. Besides the 5-inch display size (which will completely supplant the 4.7-inch model), the iPhone 7s is also expected to feature a rear dual-camera setup similar to that of today’s iPhone 7 Plus. But whereas that phone has its dual cameras situated horizontally,... Read more...

According to a new report, Apple is planning to make a big splash with the iPhone 8, which will arrive in fall 2017, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is working on at least ten different iPhone 8 prototypes, one of which features a curved OLED display. This move would finally bring Apple in line with display technology that Android flagships adopted years ago. Samsung has been a leader in... Read more...
At times it feels as though Apple can be stubbornly slow in adopting features that other smartphone makers have already implemented, one of which is wireless charging. Many hoped it would be included with the iPhone 7. It was not, though don't lose hope if you're an iPhone fan, there is chatter that wireless charging will be one of the feature upgrades on the iPhone 8.That tidbit comes from an industry source who is supposedly familiar with the matter. According to the unnamed source, Hon Hai Precision (parent firm of Foxconn) is producing wireless modules for what will be the 10th anniversary... Read more...
Apple typically likes to keep things very close to the best when it comes to its unreleased products. Apple suppliers are usually very tight-lipped and rarely telegraphic the movements of the world’s most profitable smartphone manufacturer. However, it appears that Tai Jeng-wu, the recently installed CEO of Japanese display maker Sharp, didn’t get that memo. While speaking to a group of students at Tatung University over the weekend while receiving an honorary doctorate, Tai stated, "The iPhone has been evolving and now it is switching from LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) to OLED panels.” Those... The rumor mill never stops when it comes to Apple products — especially with regards to the iPhone. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were just revealed last week, and customers won’t get their hands on the smartphones until Friday morning at the earliest. But given the evolutionary nature of the A10 Fusion-powered phones, pundits are already looking forward to what will be released next year in celebration of the iPhone’s 10th anniversary. It’s being hypothesized that the next generation iPhone will leave behind its aluminum unibody construction, which has served it well since the release of the... Read more...
