It's pretty amazing the things you can do with a modern day smartphone. It's possible to check up on e-mail, let your friends know where you're eating dinner, and even make a few phone calls. But you already knew that. What we're really after is the development community, which has put out some rather astounding software over the years. Android is a platform where wild developments are happening quickly, as Google's barrier to app entry is pretty low in terms of major OS barriers. If you build it, and it's not malicious, it'll almost definitely score a spot in the market. And even if not, it's... Read more...
Earlier this month, a man claimed he was injured by an exploding Motorola Droid 2. There's word from Motorola on their investigation into the matter, and their pretty clear: the Droid 2 was dropped. Here's what GearLog (PCMag) said: We got word this morning from a Motorola employee involved with Droid development that the phone may not have exploded at all. The Droid 2 in question "was a phone that got dropped," the employee told PCMag. "[T]he guy didn't notice the glass had cracked [...]so when he put it to his ear, he cut himself." That makes sense, and explains Aron Embry's injury. It doesn't... Read more...
A Cedar Hill, Texas resident claims that his brand-new Motorola Droid 2 exploded next to his ear, when he was trying to make a call. Aron Embry reported hearing a "popping sound" come from his Droid 2, although he felt no pain at first. He did, however, being feeling blood dripping onto his neck. Embry then drove to his wife Kara's place of work, where pictures were taken before heading for the ER. Embry was in the emergency room for several hours, and received four stitches in his left ear. Although not experiencing any hearing loss, Embry does not have health insurance, and hopes for help from... Read more...
Pat yourself on the back if you've been eyeballing Motorola's Droid 2 and managed to wait this long without upgrading your crusty old Razr (a respectable cell phone for its time). Your reward? Verizon has gone and snipped the price of the Droid 2, which now runs $150 with a 2-year contract (and after a $100 mail-in-rebate in the form of a debit card). Apparently the price cut is meant to make way for the GSM-enhanced Droid 2 Global, which will eventually replace the original Droid 2. The Global version adds a few new features to the mix, including remote wipe of the device and SD card should you... Read more...
It was mentioned briefly in the full-on DROID 2 announcement, but Motorola's stock phone won't be the only DROID 2 to ship this year. The smartphone world is quickly becoming overran with variations of "DROID," but there's probably no chance that this one in particular will get overlooked. It's a nerd's dream come true, and it's the perfect phone for any Star Wars or George Lucas fan: it's the DROID R2-D2 edition. This will be a limited edition phone that is only sold online starting next month, and Verizon nor Motorola is confessing to how many units will be made available. The phone will only... Read more...
Motorola's original Droid smartphone was a big hit. Now, the company has released an update to this popular phone in the form of the Droid 2. Like its older brother, this smartphone will be hitched to Verizon Wireless' network. Other key specs include 8 GB of preloaded on-board memory and an 8 GB microSD card, a multi-touch 3.7-inch display, and a 5-megapixel camera. The Droid 2 by Motorola will be available at www.verizonwireless.com on August 11 and will hit Verizon... Read more...
According to a leak from Verizon's system, the carrier is planning to phase out the original Motorola DROID smartphone as well as the budget Devour. Both smartphones will get few, if any, more shipments as Verizon Wireless sells out its remaining stock. At this point, no estimate has been given as to when the phones will sell out, but neither phone is listed in Verizon's leaked summer catalog. DROID Forums spotted the departure, which also includes devices such as the original BlackBerry Tour, the Nokia Twist, and a few Samsung feature phones including the Intensity, Knack, Saga, and Smooth.
