A couple of weeks ago, Blizzard rolled out a patch to the PC version of its mega-hit Overwatch that removed support for ultrawide resolutions (which would include multi-monitors). That move spurred a huge discussion on whether or not ultrawide resolutions give too much of an advantage over those using regular displays -- a discussion that's not going to have everyone in total agreement. With a new forum post made by a Blizzard developer, though, we can see that the company might just regret the move it had made. Overwatch's 'Game Director' Jeff Kaplan said in response to a question about 21:9 support,... Read more...
Don't think that just because Overwatch is a huge hit that Blizzard will just sit back and ride the momentum. Just the opposite, Blizzard's stepping on the gas with new features for its newest game franchise, including competitive play, which it's rebuilding and taking in a new direction after receiving feedback from gamers during the beta period. "We were hoping that from the beta version of competitive play, we would need to do some polish and iteration and then release the feature but we felt like the feedback we got was basically asking for a different direction. So competitive play is quite... Read more...
Blizzard has another successful franchise on its hands and it took less than a month for that to be evident. Based on Blizzard's headcount, there are now more than 10 million gamers playing Overwatch, a cartoonish shooter that released to Windows PCs, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One barely more than three weeks ago on May 24, 2016. Overwatch is Blizzard's first attempt at a shooter, though it's no stranger to wildly popular franchises. World of Warcraft, probably its most lucrative IP to date, hit a high of 12 million monthly subscribers six years ago. Hearthstone, which ties into the WoW universe... Read more...
It seems as though nearly every corner of the web offers a login option through your Facebook account. The world's largest social playground has its hooks deep in the Internet, and now it's added Blizzard to its conquests. Starting soon, you'll be able to log into games such as Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, Diablo III, and StarCraft II using your Facebook credentials. "Blizzard games are best when played with friends, so it’s important to us to provide our players with features and services that make it easy and fun to share their experiences with each other,"... While the world's leading GPU vendors can't seem to get enough of 4K resolutions, making sure to promote it with the release of each new top-end model in recent years, those who've discovered ultrawide resolutions tend to just not care about it. The reasons for that can be explained with simple math. At 21:9, ultrawide monitors can increase what you see in a game by just over 30% compared to 16:9 (4K, 1080p, etc) models. That benefit ties into a second one: even the mammoth resolution of 3440x1440 (as is equipped with Acer's incredible Predator X34) has just 2/3rds the pixels of 4K, meaning... Read more...
There are few things that can ruin an online game quite as fast as a cheater. If a bug is exploited, a cheater can turn an otherwise great game into a downright frustrating one, and it seems this is a point Blizzard understands well. While cheaters are almost expected in any online game, Blizzard is having none of it with Overwatch. In an official forum post, Blizzard Community Manager Lylirra says, "Play nice; play fair" is one of the company's core values, and it's something that's built into each and every Blizzard title. What does that mean in Overwatch? There's no lenience with cheaters -... Read more...

This is turning out to be one heck of a year for geek culture in entertainment. First, fans (both new and old) of the Star Wars franchise were treated to a long awaited sequel to the original trilogy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and later this year World of Warcraft may be tempted to log off the popular MMORPG long enough to see the movie Warcraft. Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures released a 30-second teaser trailer of the forthcoming flick based on Blizzard's cash cow of a franchise. It's a blended live-action, CG movie set in Azeroth, a peaceful place that's on the brink of war as... Read more...
Activision Blizzard is sitting on several lucrative game franchises, and to squeeze even more money out of them, it's launching a new film and television studio that will create original content based on its library of iconic intellectual properties. Former Disney executive Nick van Dyk will co-head the new venture, which has been dubbed Activision Blizzard Studios. The studio's first production will be Skylanders Academy, an animated TV series based on Skylanders. It has the backing of some talented people, like Eric Rogers (Futurama), who's supervising the project, and Justin Long (Alvin and... Read more...
Like many MMORPGs, World of Warcraft can be a grind. To sidestep the time commitment required to continually level up a character, gather resources, improve skills, or whatever else is desired, some gamers turn to bots, software that automates the process. The only problem is, Activision Blizzard isn't so keen on this behavior and has dropped the ban hammer hard on gamers who've been using them. Activision Blizzard didn't specify exactly how many people it booted, saying only that it was a "large number of World of Warcraft accounts." However, a screenshot of a conversation between a player, Game... Read more...
Blizzard appears to have ended access to its games in Crimea, effectively blocking gamers there from playing Diablo III, World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, and other blizzard games. It’s just one of several U.S. companies that have exited the region recently. Others include Apple and Blizzard’s competitor, Valve. “You are receiving this email because, in accordance with current trade regulations relating to the region of Crimea, we are legally required to suspend access to your Battle.net account,” states a letter that appears to be from Blizzard, translated by Geektimes.ru. “Any recurring subscription... It's not like Blizzard to show up at its annual Blizzcon convention without a big announcement in hand, and this year is no exception. The big announcement this time around is Overwatch, a new team-based mulitplayer shooter that has the web at large making inevitable comparisons to Team Fortress 2. And with good reason, because one look at any of the screenshots or one of the gameplay trailers is all it takes to come to that conclusion. We're not saying that's a bad thing, and in fact we're rather excited about Overwatch, in part because this is Blizzard's first new franchise in 17 years. Yes,... Read more...
As Blizzard gets ready to release its Warlords of Draenor expansion pack for its highly popular World of Warcraft MMORPG, you might find yourself wondering if your PC will even be able to run it. After all, it's going to introduce higher levels of detail, updated animations, lots of new visuals, and new and improved character models. So, should you fret about your hardware? Blizzard released minimum and recommended system requirements for the expansion pack, and quite frankly, none are all that demanding, though you do need a relatively modern system to satisfy the recommended specs. Let's have... Read more...
When it comes to lucrative game franchises two of the most well-known ones happen to be Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto. Activision publishes the CoD franchise while Take-Two Interactive is responsible for publishing GTA. However, there are rumors floating around that Activision might be trying to purchase Take-Two. Speculation began when a research note from Benchmark analyst Mike Hickey talked about “an emerging romance” between both companies. Hickey said, “For Activision, acquiring Take-Two Interactive would be a no-brainer, in our view, circling some of the strongest development... Read more...
