AMD's Radeon Technologies Group (RTG) has been teasing the product we will be presenting performance metrics for in the pages ahead, for almost year now. A dual-Fiji powered Radeon card was brought out on display by AMD's CEO Lisa Hsu last June, though at the time, no name had been designated for the card. AMD has officially turned on the hype machine for Polaris, its next generation GPU architecture that will eventually be the foundation of a new family of Radeon GPUs from top to bottom. In anticipation of its launch later this year, AMD has erected a dedicated Polaris page on its website that highlights the various technologies and features involved. The new microsite also provides what looks to be the first glimpse of a naked Polaris GPU. After almost a year of sneak peeks and strategic demos, AMD has finally begun shipping its dual-Fiji GPU powered graphics card, the Radeon Pro Duo. At the risk of not wanting to count chickens before they hatch, it's pretty hard to not be excited for AMD right now. For so many years, the company has struggled to increase its share value due to a lack of truly competitive products. However, this week, we've heard of two examples of how AMD could turn itself around, and the benefits are already materializing. We first got a glimpse of AMD’s new Wraith coolers back in early January at CES. As a replacement for AMD’s long-serving PIB coolers, Wraith promised a greater surface area to dissipate heat, a copper base, aluminum fins, and a low-noise fan to keep the ruckus down. The cooler made its official debut the following month with the FX-8370 and A10-7890K processors. AMD reported its first quarter financial results for 2016 earlier today, which continued to show losses and increased expenses in multiple areas. The company showed a net loss of $109 million, a loss per share of $0.14, and a non-GAAP net loss of $96 million, or $0.12 per share. Revenue was $832 million, which was down 13 percent sequentially, and down 19 percent year-over-year. According to the company, the losses and increased expenses were primarily due to lower sales of semi-custom SoCs and client notebook processors, and increased R&D expenses related to new and upcoming products.But slipped... Beyond the occasional nugget from AMD, concrete details about its forthcoming Polaris GPU architecture are hard to come by. We've mostly had to rely on leaked information and rumors, and if the latest leaked roadmap is to believed, Polaris will replace both the Radeon Fury and Radeon 300 series of graphics cards.The slide shows Polaris 10 and Polaris 11 in place of the Radeon Fury and Radeon 300 series, with Polaris 10 overlapping both. If Sony was hoping to keep its plans of releasing an upgraded PlayStation 4 console that's capable of playing games at 4K Ultra HD, under wraps, it's doing a poor job. The rumors are coming in hot and heavy from all directions. According to the latest chatter, the PlayStation 4.5 will likely be equipped with an AMD Polaris GPU.Let's back the boat a moment. Late last year, Raja Koduri and crew, at the AMD Radeon Technologies Group launched the Radeon Software Crimson Edition software suite and publicly committed to improving the company’s software and drivers. With such a big emphasis being placed on virtual reality and the development platforms backing the VR movement, it should come as no surprise that hardware companies are quickly embracing the need for more computational power and the need to work with larger datasets. To the end, AMD has announced that new member is joining its FirePro W9100 family, and this one is coming to the dinner table with 32GB of VRAM in tow (8Gb x 32). AMD just released some details regarding its upcoming seventh generation of A-Series and FX APUs, formerly codenamed Bristol Ridge. Bristol Ridge is essentially a refresh of the previous generation Carrizo design and uses the same 28nm process. In lieu of a die shrink, however, AMD has made improvements to the manufacturing process, tweaked the transistor mix, and enabled new features that were previously dormant in Carrizo, and the end result is higher frequencies at a given power level, in addition to some IPC (instructions per clock) improvements.
