It's common knowledge that game console and game sales have been in a serious slump this year. According to conventional wisdom, this is part of the console refresh cycle -- sales of older hardware falls off as customers await new products, even when manufacturers are publicly committed to long life cycles for current generation hardware. Makes sense, right? Right. But a new comparison between long-term hardware sales for Sony and Nintendo products makes it clear that the recent decline in shipments isn't a new development -- it's been building for a long time. Take a look at Sony and Nintendo's... Read more...
The Xbox One looks on paper to be a worthy successor to the Xbox 360, though some may find the console cost prohibitive with a starting price tag of $500. That's especially true if you just dropped a chunk a change on an Xbox 360 bundle. That's fine, you don't need to rush out and buy an Xbox One on day of release if you don't want to, though in three years, you'll have extra incentive to upgrade. Microsoft said it will stop supporting the Xbox 360 beyond 2016. In other words, no more security updates or compatibility patches, which means you're a sitting duck if you continue to use the console... Read more...
The more that things change, the more things stay the same. It's not always true, but funnily enough, it has a way of continuing to be a solid adage. Despite incredible advances in graphical technology, one of the world's most popular games at the moment involves precious little resources: Minecraft. It's a pixelated masterpiece, and it has engrossed a huge chunk of gamers far and wide, platform to platform. Soon, another major title will joining forces -- in fact, one of the world's most graphically intense titles will be coming to one of the most graphically simple titles. The Xbox 360 edition... Microsoft is putting the finishing touches on its transition away from Microsoft Points for the Xbox ecosystem. One of those touches is bringing back the Xbox Live Rewards program, which was temporarily put on hold while Microsoft stopped the Points program. As of yesterday, the system is up and running – with Rewards Credits, rather than Points. Sadly, the punch cards don't let you mix and match: you'll need to buy five map packs to complete a card, for example, rather than watch some TV, buy a few map packs, and buy an app. As before, there are plenty of ways to earn credits, which can... If you pre-ordered an Xbox One or otherwise plan to purchase one when it comes out but already own an Xbox 360, you may find yourself in a bit of pickle when it comes to new game releases. After all, games aren't cheap, and do you really want to pay a premium for a new title today when you'll be sitting pretty with a brand new console in a few months? To help you make that decision, Amazon just kicked off a new promotion that allows you to upgrade select Xbox 360 titles to the Xbox One version for $10. The promotion runs until the end of the year (December 31, 2013) and is valid for eight games,... Read more...
John Carmack's annual Quakecon keynote is one of the most interesting events of the entire year. The man is incredibly intelligent and understands programming and development to a degree that very few people can match. id may have struggled to replicate the gameplay successes of its early years, but Carmack's understanding and perspective on the technical issues surrounding gaming is second to none. This year, he kicked off by discussing the upcoming consoles, their hardware capabilities (very similar) and the long-term impact on AMD. Carmack believes that having everyone standardized on the same... Read more...
Make no mistake: the world is 3D printing has become an incredibly interesting one, and one that's growing at breakneck pace. What was once a hobby for high-end science labs has quickly become a favorite amongst average consumers, and now, companies far and wide. Ford has just published a video showing an engineer building a vibrating shift knob using just a 3D printer and an Xbox 360 controller. The point? To create an intelligent shift knob that helps people learn how to drive a manual vehicle, and it also is designed to vibrate when one should shift in order to save the most fuel. It's built... There was no better selling console in the U.S. last month than the Xbox 360. Microsoft sold 140,000 Xbox 360 consoles in June, outpacing Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii and Wii U platforms to take pole position. Of course, this is nothing new for the Xbox 360, which has been outselling the competition for 30 straight months now, according to The NPD Group. Microsoft made the revelation in a blog post, adding that the total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in June (hardware, software, and accessories) reached $197 million, the most for any console in the U.S. Will that kind of success... It might have been released over two-years-ago, and is said to be the final game in the current series, but this weekend, Capcom announced that there's still more love coming to Super Street Fighter IV. The announcement took place at the ongoing Evolution Championship Series tournament in Las Vegas, where gamers have been strutting their stuff in Street Fighter X Tekken, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Mortal Kombat and Persona 4 Arena. Not surprisingly, the upcoming DLC will rebalance much of the roster (full details can be found at the article linked-to below). In addition, six stages are being... Read more...
Not interested in ponying up for an Xbox One? Looking to spruce your Xbox 360 up? Microsoft has just the hardware for you. In a matter of months, Microsoft and Sony will launch their respective Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles to retail, and as evidenced by declining dollars being spent on gaming goods, it appears gamers are especially anxious to get their paws on these next generation devices. That doesn't mean that today's consoles will suddenly fall by the wayside, however, and if you plan to stand pat with your Xbox 360, you can look forward to some upcoming discounts on popular titles. According to Microsoft's Major Nelson, the Xbox Live Marketplace is gearing up for an "Ultimate Game Sale" in which over 30... Read more...
Ever since Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One in May, the user community has raised holy hell about the 24-hour mandatory online check in, the loss of used game sales, and the onerous online requirements that prohibited game or console imports into countries where the Xbox One service hasn't officially launched. Microsoft's entire E3 demo was buried thanks to a $499 price tag and a crushing video from Sony. Throwing military users under a bus by insisting they just buy an Xbox 360 was apparently the final straw. Today, Microsoft threw in the towel. The Xbox One will not require a 24-hour check in.... What's a console maker to do once they introduce their next-gen console? Redesign the outgoing one! It's becoming something of a trend, actually. Sony's PlayStation 3 has been tweaked two or three times, while the Wii Mini hit as the Wii U was taking the spotlight. Now, with the Xbox One making its grand debut, Microsoft is going to redesign the Xbox 360 and keep it alive for a bit longer for those who don't want to splurge on a $500 next-gen machine. The new 360 actually takes some visual cues from the Xbox One, mostly as it's a more squared device. Xbox 360, which has sold more than 76 million... Read more...
Bethesda Softworks is prepping a new title in the Wolfenstein series that pits the franchise's hero, B.J. Blazkowicz, against an alternate-history version of the post World War II era in which the Nazis, not the Allies, were ultimately victorious. BJ, apparently on ice for more than a decade, awakens in this nightmare version of the future -- a nightmare that the trailer refers to as a "rewriting", implying that BJ, at least, is aware of what's happened. Some losses... are unthinkable Wolfenstein always delved heavily into the Nazi fascination with the occult; the last games in the series relied... Read more...
