SanDisk Extreme 510 Portable SSD Review: Rugged, External Storage

Introducing the SanDisk Extreme 510

SanDisk recently launched a new line of portable storage products, with photographers, videographers, and creative professionals in mind. The particular drive we'll be showing you here, the SanDisk Extreme 510, has a 480GB capacity and attaches to a PC using USB, though smaller capacities are also available. Not only does it have the performance of an SSD, with up to 430MB/s reads and 400MB/s writes over a USB 3.0 connection, but it is also water resistant, dust resistant (IP55 rating), and rugged enough to handle the rigors of mobile computing.

In addition to being rugged, SanDisk also incorporated a few features to stylize the drive's enclosure and help safely carry it around.  To help prevent accidental drops, for example, a metal clip is built into one of the corners for connecting to a carabiner or other locking mechanism. The case is also tough and has a rubberized ring around its edges.  SanDisk includes encryption software by way of SanDisk SecureAccess as well, to keep files safe from prying eyes, with 128-bit password protected encryption.  The drive's IP 55 rating means that it offers dust resistance, can handle low pressure, and 6.3mm nozzle water jets from all directions too. There is also a connected flap to cover the data port to help keep that dust and water out when not in use.

As with most storage devices, its 430MB/s read and 400MB/s write specs are based on SanDisk’s own internal testing for max throughput, so your mileage may vary, depending on the type of system and USB port the drive is connected to. Regardless, for an external drive, these are numbers most end users can live with for a variety of portable storage needs. Let's get a closer look at the product, next...
