Microsoft Yanks Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10051 For Best-Selling Lumia 520 Following Bricking Reports

After making available a Technical Preview of Windows 10 for just a handful of Lumia handsets in February (just half a dozen), Microsoft a month and a half later opened the floodgates with a new build supporting dozens of phones, including the popular Lumia 520. Well, bad news folks -- the update is no longer available for Lumia 520 owners.

The same goes for Lumia 525 and Lumia 526 owners, all of which are having problems when users try to roll back to Windows Phone 8.1 using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. Due to receiving reports of failures associated with those specific models, Microsoft made the decision pause update availability while it looks into the problem.

Lumia 520

This is in reference to the new 10051 build of the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones. If you've already installed it on a Lumia 520, 525, or 526 handset, you should probably keep it there until Microsoft comes up with a solution. Otherwise, you risk bricking your phone.

"Glad to see you guys pull this before any more phones are damaged. I just wish I knew about this before my 520 bricked. Had to order a 635 since the 520 won't even turn on and is stuck in flash mode," a Microsoft support forum member commented.

It's unfortunate, though Microsoft did give a heads up that its list of supported device could change, depending on how things turn out. Not that it comes as any consolation to anyone stuck with an unresponsive phone, though it is a reminder of the risks involved in playing with pre-release software.
