Windows 10 Mobile Update For Legacy Lumia Smartphones Delayed Until 2016

The mantra from Microsoft has been "Windows 10 for all devices" repeated over and over again, and having played with the OS extensively on the desktop, we think the company is headed in the right direction. At the same time, it's not a movement that will happen overnight. As we've seen. it's taking some time to roll out Windows 10 Mobile beyond Microsoft's flagship Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL devices.

Microsoft originally promised to release Windows 10 Mobile to older Lumia handsets by the end of the year. No here we are with less than two weeks to go before it's time to toss our 2015 calendars in the garbage and replace them with 2016 prints. Where's Windows 10 Mobile? It's coming, though not this year as planned.

Lumia 535

"This November we introduced Windows 10 to phones including brand new features such as Continuum and Universal Windows Apps with the introduction of the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones," Microsoft is now saying.

Microsoft didn't provide a specific release date nor did it say which specific Lumia devices will be able to run Windows 10 Moblle. If you're rocking an older Lumia handset, you're essentially in a holding pattern with Windows Phone 8.1 with fingers crossed that your device will be one of the lucky ones.

The good news is it should be a smooth roll out when it finally arrives, or so we hope. The OS is already available in polished form on its newest handsets, so it's just a matter of ironing out any wrinkles that might affect older hardware.
