Try Routing THIS

While the internet is rumored to be running out of routing capabilities faster than it is running out of bandwidth, it is still interesting to see companies such as IBM push the envelope.  Of course most of today's bandwidth barrier busting technologies are optical, and this one is no different:

“The new technology uses light instead of wires to send information and could allow, for example, the transmission of 8 trillion bits (terabits) per second of information -- equivalent to about 5,000 high-definition video streams -- using the power of a single 100-watt lightbulb.”

The overall bandwidth that such a device would be capable of providing would be dependent upon the number of channels.  Currently 12.5 Gb/sec per channel is the limit, and IBM has demonstrated a 24 channel design.
