Star Wars Promo Brings Villainous Dark Side Or Heroic Light Side To Your Google Accounts

Sorry all you rebel scum, but I've joined the Dark side. You can too through a new collaboration between Google and Disney that will see all of your Google accounts get a themed makeover. Or if you'd rather, you can join the Light side, otherwise known as the losing side at the moment (though not by much).

Once you choose a side, Google will get busy transforming your online experience in a number of fun and creative ways. After choosing the Dark side, the background for my Gmail account changed to reflect my path, though there's quite a bit more to enjoy than just glorified wallpapers and the such.

When you fire up Google Maps, the little "pegman" icon (the little figure that you drag and drop into Street View) becomes a Storm Trooper or Resistance Pilot depending on which side you've chosen. And during navigation, you'll be guided by an X-wing or TIE Fighter. Cool stuff.

Google will also splash your Calendar with Star Wars events, such as the first showing of the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie on December 16 followed by a wider release in theaters everywhere on December 18, and C-3PO will give you voice navigation in Waze.

"Watch your favorite Google apps like Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome and many more transform to reflect your path. And that's just the beginning," Google stated in a blog post. "We've got more coming between now and opening night—the Millennium Falcon in all its (virtual reality) glory included, so stay tuned. And we've hidden a few easter eggs, too. So awaken the Force within, and be on the lookout for things from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…"

Even though you're cautioned to choose wisely, you're not bound to your choice -- you can switch sides at any time. To get started, head over to google.com/starwars and join the fun!
