Sony PlayStation 4 Sales Exceed 7 Million Mark, PS4 System Software Update Coming
All those consoles out in the wild has led to more than 20.5 million copies of games and related software for the PS4. That includes software sold at retail and the PlayStation Store around the world up through April 13, 2014.
"On behalf of the entire global team at PlayStation, I want to thank you for your unprecedented support and for making PS4 your next-generation console of choice. We couldn’t have done this without you! And please keep the feedback coming: we are listening," Sony said in a statement.
It's not clear how those figures compared with Microsoft's Xbox One console. The last official figure from Redmond came in January of this year -- at the time, Microsoft announced it had sold 3.9 million Xbox One consoles through the end of 2013. More recently, Microsoft began bundling Titanfall with the Xbox One, with several vendors selling the package at $449.
Getting back to the PS4, Sony is readying a major update (v1.70) to its flagship console. The update will enable SHAREfactory, Sony's new rich video editor app for the PS4 that allows gamers to customize their gameplay videos. Once edited, gamers will be able to share their videos on Facebook or export them to an external USB storage device.
The other big addition v1.70 brings is the ability to play games as soon as they're released. Gamers will be able to download pre-ordered games several days ahead of its release so that the moment a title launches, they'll be able to hop in and play.
